"Morrissey, el legendario" - translation
posted by davidt on Friday July 07 2000, @08:15AM

UPDATE (July 11): This interview never took place and is completely made up. Please read Morrissey's response to the article.

Thanks to Monica for sending in the translation of the Zona 247 interview / chronicle and to the others who volunteered. A note from Monica: "...keep in mind that if something seems awkward, it's probably because Spanish likes to exaggerate and be somewhat dramatic. So I tried to stay true to that."

If the interviewer heard correctly, Morrissey mentions that he has finished a novel which might be released this year, does not have any new songs ready (although previously saying an album was written and ready to be recorded) and actually likes the idea of distributing over the internet.

I just finished reading this supposed interview and it just doesn't click. For one, I can't believe Morrissey would "listen to whatever's on the radio"! Here is a man so complex and deep, and yet is made out to listen mindlessly to anything that happens to be on the air? I don't believe Moz listens to Britney, Mariah or Christina as well as Oasis because that would be what the staement indicates(or at least how I translate it). The rest of the interview sounds a bit like my description of the concert at the 9:30 club in DC and like many others that have been posted during the tour. I'll stick my neck out and say "I don't buy it!" But, again, that's just my opinion says me, says I, says no one.

"He didnt say that he dosent like Black Music"...blah, blah, blah(dont kid yourself, you know what "Black Music" is....if you dont belive me...walk up to any random person an ask them what black music is)

I just dont understand how clouded your view of Morrissey is. He is human, he is just another person in reality. He is entitled to like, dislike, and hate whatever he wants....and just because there is a conflict between your bad tastes and his taste...you rush to say, "Oh, well I dont beive it. Its just not tue."

Do you here how stupid and pathetic that sound?

Let him like whatever he likes....you want to turn him into a fantasy. Nobody is perfect, according to your preception of perfection, no matter how hard you want them to be.

The truth is....Morrissey probably loves many, many things that YOU probably hate!

Many of you have the worst taste in clothes I have EVER seen. (thats my popular opinion)...and some of you have good taste...while he has great taste in clothes.(Tom Ford RULES)

I wonder what he thinks when he sees some of you screaming for him...probably..."Oh dear god, who dressed that person"

We dot all have to like the same things. I find some of his tastes a bit wierd....but who cares..to each his own reason.

Just stop trying to make Morrissey somthing he is not....and let him be what he is.

P.S. Personally, and I know Im gonna get ripped for this one, I think Oasis is miles, even light years better than those hacks Gene...I mean dear god what a bunch of rip-offs...at least they could have done a good job at it...similar to Suede/Bowie....but they are really bad....personally, that means in my opinion...I think Morrissey even gives them any time because well imitation is the ultimate form......hes got n ego, and Im sure he likes it stroked.

For those many of you who think that I am mad...Listen to "Still Cant Find The Phone" on Genes Olympian CD......TOTAL FUCKING RIPOFF of "Why dont you find out for yourself"

      Ciao!

The entire music scene is going to hell, why do you think the Smashing Pumpkins are breaking up? Its shameful to see mindless acts like Britney Smears, Spears (pardon me), gobble up a lion's share of record sales because she has a flat tummy. Hey, so does Morrissey!

As for contradictions, well Moz reserves the right to change his mind and to have a little fun sometimes.

I can picture him saying he doesn't have any songs. Why? Because that's what he does.

And what sort of novel would Morrissey write, and would he actually have it published after cringing at his own early efforts about James Dean? I keep seeing courtroom drama.

And is it shocking that he has a radio in his car? Maybe he only listens to CDs in the car. He didn't say. He's a busy guy on the go with his shopping trips and all, and you need music!

Also, maybe you people were duped. maybe they told you that he was in his hotel room just so you would leave him alone. There is more than one exit, and him being Morrissey, I'm sure the hotel staff was happy to show it to him! :^)

First of all, don't blame the translator, the interview had surprised me when I read the original, then reading it in English just clarified some points.
The original's narrative is confusing: the journalist psychologically set the hall of the hotel Four Seasons in first place as the place of the interview just to say that it did not happen there after all, and then suggests that it happened in a disco after the show (if I got it right this time). The journalist narrated his own day, his own experience to get the interview, so we have a chronicle rather than an objective interview.
Now, a little attempt to interpret it: it does not seem logical that somebody going to a disco complains about disco songs. I don't know much about Morrissey's habits, but at least here (Porto) he went straight way to the hotel after the show, according to the local newspapers. And some of the posts here are saying that he was at a different hotel than the Four Seasons, but then the Four Seasons could be used just to a press conference (cancelled) in this case.
That's hardly surprising that he says he sometimes listen to Bowie's and Tricky's songs, as for the Prefab Sprouts well, could be, why not really. And that's not the end of the world if he listens to Oasis. But that thing about saying that he does not have any new songs, when he told everybody else about the difficulties to release his new album...!!! My first impression was that the interview was a fake, and now I see that I'm not the only one to have this opinion.
