Jubilee!

We had a Diamond Jubilee street party at the school where I work yesterday!
I am by no means a royalist but it was hard not to enjoy the celebrations…all the little ones in their hand-made crowns waving their hand-made Union Jacks….the school playground decked out in the bunting the children had painstakingly painted….the National Anthem playing loudly over the public address system…..cold pizza and warm orange squash on a sunny day….you get the picture!
The whole country seems to have got caught up in the spirit of the celebrations….red, white and blue as far as the eye can see….or so I thought…..
After the party I was driving to collect my own children from school when I heard a man on the radio talking about the Jubilee.
He said that he lived in London and that although he had lived on his street for many months he had yet to meet a single one of his neighbours! It seems that in London NOBODY talks to ANYBODY and that he would love to be better acquainted with the people he shares his little patch of London with.
So just imagine his delight when he returned home from work to find what he thought at first glance to be an invitation to a Jubilee street party to be held this coming weekend shoved through his letterbox.
At last a chance to meet his neighbours…. to be a part of his community….forge some friendships…to belong….HURRAH!
On closer inspection however this is what the flyer read…..
JUBILEE STREET PARTY!
TO BE HELD ON OUR STREET
SATURDAY at 2PM
*PLEASE MOVE YOUR CAR*
Land of hope and glory?!
