"The Late Show With David Letterman" August 19 1997

story by Lisa

I made a t-shirt of the new album cover and headed over to the theatre around 2-ish. I waited on the side entrance until Morrissey arrived at around 3:30. He was signing autographs for the people on the other side of the barracade. Me, in total shock at finally being so close to him, was too shy to call out his name to come over to me. I did not bring a camera or a marker for fear of being too prepared which would mean I would not get to see him. Thankfully, I met this woman there who has a big mouth and she called him over. He was signing her CD and said to me "I like your shirt" and I said "Thank you, I made it just for tonight" and he said "Oh, did you?" Then the woman said "Sign her shirt! With that marker!" And he did! I was soooo happy! I was in heaven! I managed to get into the taping and even saw him do his sound check. For the taping, I got to sit in the front row of the balcony and after he sang "Alma Matters" he looked up and waved to me! Unfortunately, that part did not get shown later that night. Of course, you already know that he and the band sounded great! Needless to say, that was definitely the greatest day of my life!
