Mozzer still whining after all these years
By TIM PERLICH
MORRISSEY Maladjusted (Mercury)
Rating: N
A string of commercial flops would be indication enough for most artists that something
isn't clicking. Call it arrogance or ignorance, but Morrissey still hasn't gotten his head
around the fact that many people find it difficult to relate to the woe-is-me whining of
fabulously wealthy pop stars who spend their days lounging in the Olympic-size swimming
pools of their multimillion-dollar estates. For the relentlessly dreary Maladjusted (out
Tuesday on vinyl, next week on CD), the moan-prone crooner again returns to his losing
strategy of neurotic whimpering, unwisely overlooking the essential importance of the
tune. That's not to suggest that poor dear Mozzer should freeze a false grin on his face
and hum happy ditties, but he really needs to get beyond the Trouble Loves Me and Satan
Rejected My Soul crap he's not fooling anyone. The viciously bitchy Sorrow Will
Come In The End, which seems to be directed at former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce who
recently dragged Morrissey through the courts in a battle over unpaid royalties is
an embarrassing career low.
