• NZ Herald Morrissey interview

Morrissey has been "interviewed" by Russell Baillie of the New Zealand Herald about life, New Zealand, the monarchy etc:

Morrissey returns for two NZ shows - The New Zealand Herald

    My favourite snippets:

"I don't feel like a contrarian, as you put it, in fact I'm unnaturally retiring. It's only social injustice that makes me shout up."

"I've spoken so much about [my autobiography] that there won't be anything left for anyone to read when it finally, finally, escapes to the public."

Last time in New Zealand, "I lost my passport, I contracted Asian Flu, I then went on to Australia where I spent 7 days under hospital supervision awaiting a blood transfusion. But the audiences were great".

"thank God for You Tube, otherwise my life would never be chronicled".

"I'm not a celebrity. I'm not here for my looks. I'm only here because of the songs".

    UPDATE 3:15PM PT:

Note posted by Librarian On Fire:

New Zealand Herald has gone and splashed a photo of Moz on their Time Out entertainment liftout section.

They also re-printed an earlier interview with Morrissey from the Daily Telegraph. (date unknown).

He doesn't live in Rome, he just obviously doesn't want the public knowing his whereabouts. As of last Christmas he lived in Bollington according to the Solo snoopies...but who knows? Does it matter? He probably wants to avoid the whole "LA situation" of having fans waiting outside the house at all hours of the day.

I enjoy moz's tongue in cheek answers this interview. Very amusing. it didn't seem so angry either like past interviews

Love it. Decent interview. Why not add Frodo, Kimbra, and Jermaine to the currency.

It's a really nice interview. I love Morrissey's ironic comments - which make me laugh too much at them.

Would Morrissey be living in Rome? Will it be, hum?

      Sarcasm?

"For me, most of the audience film and record each concert anyway, so that's a blessing. And thank God for You Tube, otherwise my life would never be chronicled."

I dont think it was. think he means that you don't hear his music anywhere else much, he gets vertually no airplay. but youtube however has gave him that platform for more people to discover his music ect.

These days he reminds me of Ken Dodd the only difference is Kens shows go on a lot longer and every show is never the same, even in old age Ken still manages to throw some new material in. Its also worth pointing out Ken Dodd no longer has a record contract either.

Nothing new here. No sign of any fresh thinking.

The ususal whinge about the British Royal Family (yawn).
Ok, so he's a 'transatlantic resident', but to which country does he pay his taxes?

Sounds like he has offers of recording contracts on the table, just doesn't like the terms. So it's negotiation time: hardly a conspiracy to keep the genius of 'Boy's A Looker' from the sweaty paws of his 'crass consumer' fans.

Live music is profitable, recorded music isn't because of the freetard download crisis. What part of this does Morrissey not understand? It's only been a developing crisis since Napster in 1999! Why does he expect other capitalist entrepreneurs to put their cash on the line, when he doesn't put his accumulated capital in as 'skin in the game'? If it doesn't make business sense to put his own wealth at risk to market his new songs: why would it make sense for anyone else to?

Autobiography presumably delayed to tie in with a new album. He could always give the new album away as a CD insert with the book if he's that bothered about the world hearing it. Far more people are likely to buy the book than to buy 'another' Morrissey Solo album that sounds from the demos so far to be much like any other Morrissey Solo album. Still, if his YouTube devotees satisfy him, that's nice.

'It's only social injustice that makes me shout up.' Not sure what this means, doesn't he mean 'animal injustice'? Didn't he make some statement about mulesing a while ago? Guess he'll bring it up again 'down under'.

I guess he's saving any fresh 'controversial' opinions for the larger American audience.

He hates how this site merges The Smiths and Morrissey, but he also merges them in live performance. Go figure...

I guess it helps sell the show to foreign promoters if there's a few Smiths-hits guaranteed/written into the contract.

      sincerely

      BrummieBoy

I fancy a Chinese takeaway tonight. And a few beers.

Miserable show and night for reasons I won't go into. But Isis showed up, which is great. She's the girl at 1:24. This is very romantic stuff, people. An exchange of love through a stage jumper.

To kind of "get" the conversation there's some set-up. Morrissey says (without knowing it but kind of knowing it I think) "Hey Isis, you out there? I do Isis too! See, Here's the wings part." It's kind of like saying "Oh you like such-and-such music? I like that music too! Lemme show you my collection." It's like cosmic flirting in a way, it's a courtship beyond most people's grasp.

      So this is Isis:

She has wings, kneels on one leg, wears a crown and loves Osiris who wears the same crown. They take turns being Isis and Osiris. They are androgyne.

So Morrissey says, "I have wings!"

And a guy jumps on the stage and looks like he's choking him and the security guard rips him off and he spreads his arms exaggerated and Isis says through him "Me too, hold on I'll show you, I'm on my way up in a second! I'll be way more gentle because I love you Osiris."

Then she gets on stage and says "Look, I'm kneeling honey! I'm here arms stretched out!" In the same frame Morrissey is standing but sitting, the cymbal of the drum kit shows his crown to her.

Like this but she doesn't have wings until a second later after they are allowed to touch.

The tape marking off the stage under her left arm indicates her wing.

Cool stuff. Unless you're Isis and Osiris who went home miserable, crabby and alone that night.

What a unique take on the state invasions Crystal ! Never saw it that way, thanks for letting us see it with a classical eye. Love how Moz take the time to at least interact with nearly all of the stage jumpers. Sort of "If you can make the effort (some crawling up onto the stage ) to get to me , I will return the love . Nice !

I agree with Guernie, Crystal. Love how you interpret these stage invasions to show how we as Morrissey devotees have such a unique love affair with our "idol."

As for the interview - Love it. I never get tired of Morrissey's humor. And, hes's right - it really is that simple (that complicated)...
