• "Studio In Session" featuring Morrissey on Sundance in Canada

    UPDATE Aug. 12, 2:15AM PT:

Thanks to the kind person who helped me get ahold of this.It pays to have Facebook friends, after all.

Non-Morrissey vignettes have been cropped out, fyi.

If you are really interested in seeing Alice Gold's or Foster the People's studio sessions, then PM me, & I'll see what I can do.

I'll be posting the MP3's of the 4 individual songs in the Bootleg forum shortly.

    Part 1: "The Kid's a Looker"

Part 2: "Scandinavia" & "Action is My Middle Name"

Part 3: "People are the Same Everywhere" and End Credits

The elusive in-studio session from last year, of Morrissey doing "The Kid's A Looker", "Scandinavia", "Action Is My Middle Name" and "People Are The Same Everywhere", the one that could only be viewed by Rogers subscribers in Canada and which was shown on some Air Canada flights, is being shown many times over the next few days on Sundance Canada for Canadian cable subscribers. Info here.

The show also includes bits of conversation between Morrissey and producer Tony Visconti.

I don't have the means to bring this to the internet anymore now that my DVR is defective (and I won't be buying a new one). If anyone knows how to bring this from my Cisco PVR to my computer, I'll gladly do it.

That recording of Scandinavia turned me into a bumpy goose. Quite literally, of course.

These are certainly vastly superior to the Janice Long versions, as well as best-quality live versions that I have. The exception being "Action is My Middle Name," which I think is perfect sounding from Glastonbury 2011.

I honestly found "The Kid's a Looker" to be basically unlistenable previously. But this version is 500 times better. Still only a C+ song (to be generous), but it's a fun romp.

The Kid's A Looker - I liked it better when it was faster and more "rock" on the Janice Long broadcast. Also, Morrissey's voice seems to falter often on this cut.
Scandinavia - The synth is buried too deep in the mix. Otherwise, good vocal performance.
Action Is My Middle Name - The flourishes of piano interspersed throughout the song are a vast improvement over the Janice Long session. A slower tempo would help this song.
People Are The Same Everywhere - The only thing interesting about this was hearing Boz playing some of the rhythm parts before the song actually started.

This was originally listed as "intimate live studio performances", however, since Visconti mentioned overdubbing the gong I can't help but think what you hear is the final recorded versions of these songs.

Thank you to the people who put these gems up for us to listen.

Scandinavia and Action is My Middle Name are the best songs and should definately be put onto an album. Do more songs like Scandinavia, Morrissey! Be Serious!

      Thanks Brandi, much appreciated!

I did really enjoy that the be fair, he sounds on the top of his game vocally, his voice is really rich sounding, strong and mature now, something that only comes with time and experience I suppose.
Having said that though I do think the songs are good but not his obvious best, Scandinavia was nice to hear in a crisp studio setting and he seemed to be relaxed, enjoying doing his work, I would really liked to have heard Art Hounds during the sesh though.

I do think he's ready now for another album, I suppose it's frustrating not getting on a suitable label that can let him breathe artistically, but I do think he's itching for it, he can't just tour and that's it, he needs another album. I'd like him to do more 'In Session' intimate recordings though, Sky Arts put on a few good ones a while back featuring The Fall and Radiohead really well filmed, and I think this kind of setting would really suit Moz.
However I'm waiting for shiny new songs and glistening cover-art damn it, I want to listen to a good 12 songs proper, hopefully Visconti will get to produce again seeing as Ringleader was brilliant, it'd be really good to hear.

Other little highlights were Moz being fanned by towel, slurping his tea and him getting a sweat on towards the end! (Must have been boiling in there)

I'd like Morrissey to sing "Tomorrow" or "Boxers" with his mature voice. I think they'd sound quite nice on tour.

I don't get what Visconti's production values are, seeing this video.

I think Morrissey singing live with the band, does nothing for the songs.

I thought a producer's job is to select the instruments used, pay attention to details, making things sound crisp, not making sure everyone's had their tea and crisps and laughing at Morrissey's quips.
How can one get the song (instruments and singing) perfect in just one take?
I understand it's a TV show and there was perhaps more to it.
Perhaps he'd do a lot of work on it alter, before the finished product is released, I dunno.

Is this the man who produced Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes'? or did Bowie did all the work and had all the ideas?

I think 'The Kid's a Looker' could benefit from some production work and become really great. I like Jerry Finn's (RIP) touches, at least he tried to change things around a bit.

I like all the songs really, I just want them to sound the best possible.

Thanks for posting, but I must agree that the songs are pretty weak. Sure, hs voice sounds strong, but the lyrics and music are both subpar in comparison to what we expect from Morrissey.

This is great evidence to bolster the argument that retirement or hiring new band mates may be good ideas.

Is he still "milking" that finger injury? How long is he going to have to wear that bandage....or is it this year's version of the "hearing aid"?

These studio clips are a year old, they were recorded in July last year.

Not the point. The point is that those subjective opinions, negative though they may be, are legitimate, and do not require the counter-production of Art on the part of the critic in order to validate said criticism.

I liked when Solomon nodded no as Morrissey sang the kid is dense. It's the little things.

This is brillant, really the first time I've seen Moz in a recording studio enivronment.

Scandanavia is a keeper for sure, just picked up on some more of the lyrics hearing it recorded vs live. Action is my middle name reminds me a lot of the un-recorded (janice long 2005?) "playing easy to get." I think the style of the tempo and sound suit him very well.

Can't wait for the fall tour and new alblum (I'm hoping) early 2013?

Thank you for posting this Brandi, we've waited on a "looooong time" for this treat~

      Amen brother. Good post.

The songs since Quarry are sub-standard (understatement) and a new band would be greatly appreciated.

Throw in the fact that his choice in song writing partners is deplorable.

      Morrissey's voice = very good.

      Morrissey's songs = pretty lousy.

      Thanks much for sharing, Brandi!

Studio treatment will certainly suit Scandinavia and Action, the best of the bunch. People... still sounds like nothing more than a workmanlike B-side. Alas, Kid... would be best served by euthanasia. I get where he's going topically and there is some wit in the lyrics, but the music is very subpar. The "la's" here sounded nigh-on out of tune - and have never sounded better than filler in other renditions.

I don't understand the hate for The Kid's a Looker and the love for Scandinavia. I think that Kid is the best song; funny and catchy and very spritely, with a pretty good melody.

Scandinavia still fails to register with me at all, on any level, which I cannot say about any other Morrissey song.

Action has grown on me a lot since last year but I don't really need a song about a 52 year old making out with someone.

People...I don't know. I want to like it but it doesn't go anywhere. Good lyrical concept and the chord progression is decent but...meh.
