NME apologises to singer Morrissey over article - BBC News

The NME has publicly apologised to singer Morrissey over an article it published in 2007, which, the singer claimed, suggested he was racist.

Excerpt:

An NME spokeswoman said the magazine was "pleased it has buried the hatchet" with the singer.

She added the matter of the libel case was now closed and that the settlement did not involve payment of any damages or legal costs.

The case had been due to go to trial next month after Morrissey won a pre-trial hearing against former NME editor Conor McNicholas and IPC at the High Court last October.

NME says sorry to Morrissey for the misunderstanding over 2007 article

In December 2007, we published an article entitled 'Morrissey: Big mouth strikes again'.

Following this, Morrissey began proceedings for libel against us. His complaint is that we accused him of being a racist off the back of an interview which he gave to the magazine. He believes the article was edited in such a way that made him seem reactionary.

We wish to make clear that we do not believe that he is a racist; we didn’t think we were saying he was and we apologise to Morrissey if he or anyone else misunderstood our piece in that way. We never set out to upset Morrissey and we hope we can both get back to doing what we do best.

Why wait 5 years to apologise? Take it to court regardless morrissey!

Re: Article: "NME says sorry to Morrissey for the misunderstanding over 2007 article"

Well that clears that up.

Does this article, with the removal of the "turn up at court" announcment mean that Morrissey accepted the online apology ?

Wasn't the issue though that Moz wanted them to publish it in one of their magazines?

From the withdrawn tty post a month back ~"The NME recently offered to apologize to Morrissey by offering space on nme.com, but not within the printed magazine. This offer was rejected as disproportionate to the damage done to Morrissey by the NME magazine itself."

So the test will be if anything appears in the magazine tomorrow.

Stuff is often posted on their website in advance of appearing in the magazine.

I'm no legal eagle, but does this letter indicate that there has been a settlement reached out-of-court?

There is nothing that can change my mind in believing that the NME was out to paint Morrissey as a racist. The article in question compared Morrissey's views on immigration are in line with the views of the BNP. Then, there is that history of racist accusations going back to 1992 and a lesser extend, to when he was with the Smiths.

Of course, this matter is almost insignificant compared to the other dealings involving the publisher rewriting the author's interview/article. Did Morrissey have a tape recorder on hand for that interview?

Someone did.

**EDIT** Frady is right. TTY did mention that. This letter may be just some formality the lawyers told the NME to do.

Merck recorded it. Seemingly the NME/McNicholas thought that if they printed the actual words Morrissey said but in reply to completely different questions than the ones Jonze asked of Morrissey, then that would be just peachy.

I'm of mixed feelings over this 'apology'. On one hand, it attempts to deflect just how serious the attempted character assassination was on Morrissey; the NME under McNichol was out for blood and headlines and scored both with that 'interview'. By characterising it as a 'mis-understanding' they're effectively absolving themselves of blame - it's the equivalent of a teenage "Well, i'm sorry if you're offended but I didn't mean it" sulk. I really can't see Morrissey accepting this as good enough, even if it does make it to the print version.

However, Morrissey has proven to be his own worst enemy many a time before and I don't believe that pursuing this in court will do him any favours. His wit and evasiveness, while sparkling in interviews, is not suitable for the High Court, as *the* court case showed. I fear he would only invite more trouble for himself if he pursuses it further. I hope he acknowledges his victory over the eNeME, dissmissies their apology as pathetic but stops action against them. Moz, please, take the easy way and give in.

hand over the cash eNeMEy

no apolgies, you've gone way too far, your magazine, even 1 of that journalist told the truth about
the racism 1992 Issue [Madstock, 1992, This Alarming Man] to have go at Morrissey, it was
time to destroy his fame in a great intervieuw, before the eNeMEy was somehow suporting
and positive about Morrissey

Up to now, take yer apologies where the sun don;t shine, you gonna pay for the damage you
did about Morrissey's fame in the UK [plus parts of the interviuew were translated and published in several magazines around the world]. the Court will be this time in favour for Morrisssey, and he'll ask a huge amount of money because it
hold labels and agents, venues, etc. not to do bussiness with Morrissey...

The Courtcase regarding Morrissey vs eNeMEy

the magazine guilty of false rascim acusions and hate campain against Morrissey!

*knock*
350,000 BP to pay by the magazine to Mr Morrissey
*knock*

Out!

This pretty much nails it.

It was a reprehensibly shoddy piece of journalism by some coked-up rich kids, but NME will be dead by year's end anyway. Morrissey has an apology, lame as it may be, from NME/McNicholas and Quanitck/The Word. He should walk away from this one, save himself the grief and cash and find himself a drummer. The High Court dock is one venue that Morrissey should avoid completely; "Unlimited self-sabotage", etcetera...

As frightening as it is to imagine Morrissey on the wit-less stand (especially memories of his behavior during the Smiths Trial) nothing, not even his smart-ass mouth, could change the fact that he is right, and when you are right, you stay right.

I think with the NME/Morrissey history, the recordings, and the recent brouhaha over the Murdock Hacking scandal, where all journalist practices are being scrutinized, the planets seem aligned to be in his favor.

Re: Article: "NME says sorry to Morrissey for the misunderstanding over 2007 article"

well, with hindsight
if his court trial results in NME actually going under, then he should keep going :thumb:
if not, then forget it :o
