Johnny Marr gig report at the Night & Day Cafe (Sep. 29); set list included 5 Smiths songs

See the forum thread for more reports, videos and images.

Report posted by Dave2006:

Top night last night - Johnny is one cool, cool bloke. Well, last night he was sweating buckets because it was so hot in there.

At one stage he stood in front of the monitors playing to the crowd, people were patting him on the head and ruffling his hair, one guy in the front row was obviously saying something to Johnny and it looked like Johnny kissed the top of his head - it was a surreal, beautiful moment.

A mate lifted the set list from the guitarist at the end and gave it to me -

There is a Light was lined up as a potential final encore (there is a question mark at the end of the title, but it's not too clear on the photo) but after 'It's My Life' (was this a cover - it sounded vaguely familiar?) he left the stage not to return. The roadie shouted at the DJ 'plug your ipod in, quick!'

As the clip above shows, How Soon is Now was fantastic - watching the guitarist use the slide made me wish that Morrissey had guitarists with half as much talent these days...

Looking forward to Deaf Institute next week.

He int no front man. Cringe.

Give the guy a break, It's his first gig singing in ages, playing songs he hasn't played live for 25 years. I'll be up the front next week cheering like a mad bastard.

Yeah, but he sounds better playing and singing at the same time, than that mess Tobias creates anytime he touches a Smiths tune.

The encore was dropped because it was like an oven in the Night & Day last night.

I want to go see him, even if I just know the smiths songs. :guitar:

The real Johnny B. Goode. :)

Morrissey need some new blood on the guitars.

If Morrissey's Smiths versions are all about the voice, and Marr's Smiths versions are all about the guitar, I say that I Mozzer comes out on top as the true exponent.

I'll allow that the Morrissey band have never captured the elegance, fluidity & ethereality of Marr's playing, but listening to the above recordings you realise how crucial Morrissey's vocal, phrasing & idiosyncratic swerves are to the songs.

Together they were an extraordinary partnership, but apart it is Morrissey that carries the essence.

I read everything above. Yes, Moz has a unique voice. Yes, he was the "image" of the Smiths. But...he didn't play and sing at the same time. Moz would, in fact, be nowhere without Marr. I think Johnny did a very very very admirable job on vocals. Seeing this .... I really would have made the trip from Montreal to Manchester to see this. I met Johnny and Bernie during promo interviews (in Toronto for Electronic) and what struck me was how freakin uncomplicated and nice he was. as was Bernie. I'm not going to blast Morrissey's current band and get David into trouble. I'm happy for Marr.

Morrissey playing Smiths songs live on tour. Johnny Marr playing Smiths songs live on tour.
Would it really kill them to play some some Smiths songs TOGETHER on stage, instead of apart?

This.

I know it will never happen (for various reasons, not the least of which is Jesse holding onto his association with Moz with a death grip) but just think how much better the Morrissey band would be with Johnny in it (and the removal of the dreaded Jesse Tobias).

It wouldn't just be an overwhelming improvement sonically but in musical composition as well. It sucks that were stuck with Jesse.

So frustrating.

i really dig seeing JM do Smiths stuff. now that him and Moz are both digging into the faults we get multiple takes on classics. i kind of prefer this to a smiths reunion, not b/c the smiths wouldn't do them better (they very well might) but b/c it keeps the smiths aura intact.

that would be vaults not faults.

First against the wall.Johnny Marr.

Well, that's very interesting since you were the same poster who slagged Johnny off in the first response to this thread. You must really hate him. And you'd be in the minority here.

Because Johny is my GOD.
