"List of the Lost" review by Fabricio Muller at Mondo Bacana (Portuguese)

I think this novel is perhaps best appreciated by those who have only a passing familiarity with the English language.

Well, I think that has to count as the best review so far. And not just in the sense of being the most positive.

Yep, after all those so-called professional reviews in so-called national newspapers, I think everybody was waiting for a review in Portuguese by an anonymous blogger so that we can finally get some authoritative guidance.

Despite the coincidence of youthful protagonists excelling at sports in the Boston vicinity, the writer does LOTL no favors by drawing comparisons to Infinite Jest. First there is the simple matter of breadth: 118 pages versus 1,000+ (with around 200 pages of footnotes). Of course, the length of a work is not emblematic of its worth. But Infinite Jest makes LOTL seem underachieving by comparison.

Much more importantly, Infinite Jest contains literally DOZENS of characters, with widely divergent characterizations and nuanced "lives." LOTL features nine husks who all sound like Morrissey and shares his worldviews.

having a large cast can also muddle and bore a reader. as you said length doesnt matter so much as execution and neither does the number of characters

Well, as the review points out, "Anyway, List Of The Lost is very different from Infinite Grace. (sic)"

To say nothing of a comment to that from someone who's not even prepared to put an alias behind his statements on a message board. To suspend for a minute my usual practice of ignoring all those who post here as anonymouses.

I'm just a coward I guess. But don't you mean"anonymice"?

To use a beverage metaphor, List Of The Lost isn't everyone's "cup of tea". I get that and with most critics, I sadly have to assume it. Those who like things "straight, no chaser", will really "drink" this book up.

i think its trying to appeal to literary nerds myself and probably wont reach many at risk kids as someone mentioned in another thread. dont know for sure or if it succeeds n regards to either approach but thats my thought. its on my list to read and im doing well at not skipping down the list so far but glancing at its pages and hearing about it make me think that

are you saying that the reviewer only has a passing familiarity with the English language? And if so, What makes you assume that ?

Who said or believed this to be... 'authoritative guidance' ? And what makes a professional review/reviewer professional ?

"Infinite jest" was published in Brazil for the first time in the very end of last year and the rumors about the book were enormous.

Probably posts as anonymous to avoid people who want money for their concert tickets.

LOL yes true. in the moz world everything is topsy turvy and upside down. professional reviewers are idiots and 'bloggers' are incisive savants.
anonymous posting here an idiot, posting a bogus anonymous review on amazon perfectly sensible. LOL

list of the lost will forever live in infamy. even boz probably has a laugh when leafing thru it.

as someone already pointed put not all reviewers are equal or in some cases even literary reviewers but feature writers for the papers. i like seeing fan reviews but through experience i trust literary reviewers much more when it comes to novels. other authors as well
