TTY statement: Hammersmith last ever UK gigs?!

Re: TTY STATEMENT HAMMERSMITH!!! Last ever UK gigs????!

UK labels aren't unique in their disinterest in Morrissey; he can't find a deal anywhere. Either this is some sort of stunt to try to generate label interest, or....he's getting ready to retire.

Re: TTY STATEMENT HAMMERSMITH!!! Last ever UK gigs????!

Call me a sceptic, call me an optimist, but I don't think what he's said is true (I pray what he's said isn't true?). He's bound to get a new deal eventually...surely? He's addicted to writing, and although he doesn't need to have a deal to write, I'm sure he enjoys the appreciation from fans when he sings and releases new material.

What major label is going to sign a 56 year old who is notoriously difficult and doesn't sell albums?

Re: TTY STATEMENT HAMMERSMITH!!! Last ever UK gigs????!

I needed to read it twice. I couldn't be believe. The way he speaks he will not play in UK anymore.

Re: TTY STATEMENT HAMMERSMITH!!! Last ever UK gigs????!

I guess he feels at this point that he can't do another "wilderness years."
I'd agree that at this point, he's unlikely to face another Quarry-type resurgence bar reuniting with Marr. But damn.
I guess if there's still no interest by the "end" of this world tour, that'll be it. And it's not like he'll be making any headway in terms of presenting new material to companies while on tour. So.

Re: TTY STATEMENT HAMMERSMITH!!! Last ever UK gigs????!

Glad I have tickets now.
I think there is much truth in the retirement idea.
As, clearly, if he was offered a deal in any other country - they'd expect him to tour an album.
It would then be daft to avoid the counties that never offered a deal, as to be fair, that would kill an album selling. This would also explain the exhaustive nature of recent gigging itinerary. To imply England is required for him to have a deal to then create future releases and tours is ececcentric, untruthful Moz at his best.
So in his usual way, he's using this as a way to justify going in to semi retirement with the odd book, music project maybe or turning up at events et al. He truly is mimicking Kenny Williams in a lot of ways.
Best of luck to him.
Regards,
FWD

Wow - ticket sales really have been poor if he's forced to such desperate measures to try and scare people into coming.

Re: TTY statement Hammersmith last ever UK gigs?!

So - he's finally admitted defeat on the solo career then. See you at the Smiths reunion tour next year? ;)

My heart is on the floor. I know he can't go on forever, but I guess I'll never be ready to hear this type of news. I was in such a great mood 5 minutes ago. Now I'm just sad. Why can't he just get someone to help him self produce or whatever it is he's got to do? He doesn't have to retire.

I hope you're right that he's just trying to generate label interest... :(

Re: TTY statement Hammersmith last ever UK gigs?!

Desperate attempt to shift £75 tickets if you ask me...

And if it really is the end thanks for the memories it's been a blast. Typical Morrissey to go out with a whimper rather than a bang though.

Morrissey has commented:

"There is absolutely no way that we can generate any interest from record labels in the United Kingdom, therefore the imminent two nights at Hammersmith are likely to be our final ever UK shows. We are obsessively grateful for all interest and loyalty from our audience ... throughout 28 years ... but without new releases, there is no point in any additional touring. Thank you for so many absolutely incredible times. The pleasure and privilege is mine ... "

He would have known about sluggish ticket sales well in advance. I'm not sure why he would choose to wait until the 11th hour to drum up publicity to boost sales, if that's the case. Though I suppose it's never too late to try to sell tickets...

Notice how only the UK is mentioned, and nothing about this being the last European tour. Maybe he is just going to boycott the UK, same as he singles out Canada for a boycott over 'animal rights', whilst happily touring the rest of the world?

*sigh* Yeah, it has been.

Enough said, I guess.

I can't say I didn't see this coming, you Brits complain about everything about him, song order, ticket price, etc. LA will take your shows gladly. Morrissey we adore you unconditionally. Come Home

Literally the moment he posted it my three-yr-old neighbor Nachito had an epic meltdown everyone could hear. He recovered quick, so will Moz.

Christ, what a tantrum for having to suffer playing to a half empty venue on a Tuesday night.

hopefully he'll swing through the states one more time if he ends up applying this across the board rather than just exclusively to the uk.

this last u.s. tour was extraordinary.

If "...without new releases, there is no point in any additional touring" is true for the UK, why should Morrissey want to play LA playing the same old songs over and over? Why play anywhere?
