Alain Whyte reminisces about "Southpaw Grammar" on Facebook, released 20 years ago (Aug. 28, 1995)

Re: Alain Whyte reminisces about Southpaw Grammar, released 20 years ago today

Great album, though personally I think he is wrong regarding 'Teachers'. Never mind shortening it, that song could have gone on for another 10 minutes - it's a killer! :)

Funnily enough Teachers & Southpaw are my 2 favourite tracks! He is bang on about 'Nobody Loves Us' and 'You Must Please Remember.' I still think the album would've worked as an 8 track affair if he'd simply swapped out 'Best Friend' and 'Do Your Best' for the 2 aforementioned songs. Or of he'd waited just a little bit longer and had those 'Boxers' sessions to add to the album. There were some classic tracks on that EP.

Alain Whyte Facebook post - Aug. 28, 2015

"20 years ago today Southpaw Grammar was released. I was not crazy about the album cover and was never crazy about the color orange. This could have been a better album had Teachers and Southpaw been shortened along with Nobody Loves Us and You Must Please Remember being added. Both of which ended up being b sides due to lack of songs. I don't know why this was. Spencer's finest drumming moment was The Operation and the whole album in general. He was on fire. I missed my buddy Gaz on this record. Southpaw and Dagenham Dave were my favorites. Dagenham had a ton of backing vocals I can't remember how many I tracked. We tracked Southpaw live. I tampered with my boss delay pedal to get the b chord looped while playing on top of it in the verses. Then had it set up for the outro in time to the click where at some point I put my guitar on top of the grand piano and let the pick up take in what I was playing on the piano. There was no room for error as it would have spoiled the live take. The way Southpaw ends is due to the 2 inch tape running out on the spool hence the sound of how it ends. It could never be repeated as it is just how we played it , jammed out till the tape stopped us. It was amazing watching Steve Lillywhite work the old fashioned way, a true master. We never realized how big a budget was being spent in those days to recording for a few months in the beautiful Hook End Manor in the country. It's a different ball game now and I'm grateful for being a part of how records used to be made. The tape op had to spice the tape to make an edit. Get that wrong you're in big trouble. Now it's click digitally on a lap top. Good times in the industry back then."

I'm not fond of orange either, but Moz seems to love it (Southpaw, WPINOYB, List of the Lost cover).

Meanwhile, what does it say on that round sticker? "Includes limited edition booklet"?

I'd give up honesty if I were you.

omg you are so annoying! did moz paid you to defend him or something?

It's a very so-so follow up to a truly great album. Still, it sounds better musically than anything from YOR, and much of WP.

I've always thought Southpaw was a criminally underrated album.

God bless this dude and I wish he was still in the fold.

Southpaw Grammar is one of Morrissey's best albums and it's Alain's shining moment as a musician by a long shot.

Yes, it's just some album sized pics from the tattoo and roughed up pics and some large sized lyrics.
Bought 2 as I framed the pictures.
This was prior to it being deleted and reissued. Southpaw was quite scarce at one point.
Nobody Loves Us definitely should have been on it.

true :/

Doesn't orange mean Brit Protestant? I guess this was 9 years before Irish Blood.

I can't believe Jeremy or Bryce at The Morrissey Marketing Group LTD-Malibu didn't think of this first, but how about I reckon ya'll a boxing match between Alain Whyte and Jesse Tobias at the LA Sports Arena sponsored by Kerry Gold/Dubliner Irish Cheese and Butter-USA and the winner takes over as lead guitarist? I mean Jesse can wear Mexican flag boxing trunks and all the Mexicans in LA will buy the tickets and Alain Whyte can wear his Brit flag trunks. Jake can be Alain's towel boy and Damon can be Jesse's with Nancy being the ring announcer. What more could Morrissey want?...... boxing, androgynous men married to women, cheese, and Nancy.

I don't know about you lots, but I would bet 350 stones on Alain Whyte.

Southpaw is a gem. Best closer of any moz album

FULL MARKS TO YOU!

It's better than Vauxhall and I. It's great as it is. It's rock n' roll.

Wonder why it was limited?

Yeah it was only included with the vinyl of which I am glad I bought years ago as it seems to be quite expensive on ebay.

Just realised I don't have You Must Please Remember on my iPod. I need to find the cd single of Dagenham Dave!!!

As far as I know it was included with all the vinyl versions. I don't ever remember seeing a vinyl copy without the booklet.

It only has the lyrics to Teachers... but then so did the CD and Cassette.
