Pete Townshend: “I said no to producing Morrissey’s album” (Q350 Preview) - Q Magazine

Morrissey asked Pete Townshend to produce an album for him, The Who man has told Q.

Speaking in our new issue, Q350 out now, where he gives us 10 Commandments for a better life, the guitarist says he was approached by The Smiths singer to work on his solo albums.

“Morrissey asked me to produce albums for him after The Smiths, twice. I’ve got his notes, his cards. ‘Will you produce an album for me? Morrissey.’,” reveals Townshend.

However The Who leader said no, though admits if a different Smith had been in touch a collaboration might have been on the cards, explaining:

“I did say to [The Who’s manager] Bill Curbishley, I really love The Smiths – if I could replace Johnny Marr in the picture there, we might get a really great album.”

Get our new issue, out now in print and on digital, for all of Pete Townshend’s 10 Commandments.

lol no.

Given the utter depravity Moz potentially having Sir Cliff as support brought out of some here:
I'm totally glad Pete and his 'history' didn't cross paths - I don't think I could take yet more supposition and insinuation.
Regards,
FWD

Maybe this was when Morrissey was going through his moped phase, I think around Your Arsenal when he loved taking photos of himself riding around on Vespas. Isn't there some movie with the The Who music in it from the 60's when a bunch of Brits are riding around on mopeds? Anonymous-

This is a strange story. Pete is definitely not known as a producer. His production credits are in this list:

http://www.allmusic.com/artist/pete-townshend-mn0000842351/credits

In many of these listings, he is a co-producer with an established producer (eg, his solo album Empty Glass, produced by Pete and Chris Thomas).

The liner notes of the Southpaw Grammar reissue say this:

"I had initially approached Brian Eno to produce, but he declined, which sent me to CHRIS THOMAS, who also declined, which threw me sheepishly back to Steve Lillywhite who had been so magnificent on Vauxhall & I, but who i felt had little patience for my I-REFUSE-TO-BE-BORN lyricisms. In the event Lillywhite excelled on Southpaw, and fate led the way."

Does he mean 'replace Johnny Marr' in terms of playing guitar WITH Morrissey, or does he mean he'd rather have produced something by Johnny? You can read that sentence either way, really.

Where's the book Peter?

Quadrophenia. An amazing album

The whole meaning of the quotation is completely dependent on what Pete Townshend is referring to with the word 'picture'. If it refers to the 'Smiths picture', then it's a disrespect to Marr. If the picture refers to producing an album with an Ex-Smith, then it's a diss to Moz.

i think this explains is clearly enough: However The Who leader said no, though admits if a different Smith had been in touch a collaboration might have been on the cards, explaining:...

sounds like if it was Johnny calling and not Moz, then game on.

Coincidentally Boz shares his birthday with Pete Townshend.

Morrissey also had been rejected by Brian Eno which is a great pity.

He must have been too busy doing "research" to produce the album

 whatever happend after that. Jesus he was propably telling the truth but he should have lied about the reason since it is the oldest trick in the book.

This. And it is a shame that he was never able to work with Joe Strummer. Who can say what the artistic merits would have been but it would have been an interesting admixture.
