Fifteen minutes with...Simon Wolstencroft - The Smiths' original drummer - Julie Hamill

 he did not think Morrissey was dashing, he must have been the first one.

On another note: everyone is getting a book published. Where is my damn book deal

In the early 80's he wasn't dashing at all.

Great read but the more I read interviews with musicians and artists from Manchester, the more it becomes clear why Moz no longer feels comfortable there or wanted to escape from there. Everyone seems to know everyone and is somehow best buddy with everyone. You can't really avoid all the people you know as you would constantly bumb into them. No one would understand that you don't really want to be best buddy with everyone. Why should you? I would not be able to breathe properly. There would be no space for progress.

Well Morrissey is an accquired taste and quite akward, but for those who find him dashing that has always been the case. He is has been pretty f*cking dashing all his life even in rags and with that crooked smile. He might not have been wearing the most fancy clothes in the beginning, but style grace and star quality always shines trought that man, rain or shine. Johnny, Andy, mike on the other hand has always been well put together, but still is sort of a hot mess.

I always knew Morrissey gave the band 99% of their sex appeal and charisma

Interview by Julie Hamill...

Fifteen Minutes With Simon Wolstencroft, Author, Fall drummer, and one who said ‘no’. - Julie Hamill

Excerpt:

Christened ‘Funky Si’ – due to his style of drumming - by his good friend Johnny Marr, Simon has played with all the Manchester legends and beyond: Ian Brown, The Fall, Electronic, The Colourfield and many more. Set in an incredible time when the city was exploding with musical talent, You Can Drum But You Can’t Hide details Simon’s journey from his school life (best pals, Ian Brown and John Squire) into his twenties (best pal Andy Rourke) through his almost-drumming career with The Patrol (later Stone Roses), and his session with The Smiths, after which, he said no to the position of permanent drummer (making way for Mike Joyce). Eventually, through drumming with various other famous and infamous bands, the book reaches his fated eleven (brilliantly turbulent) years with The Fall.

Interesting interview again from our Julie. Simon's book could be worth a read

I wonder if she will ever get the chance to interview the.main man? For his 60th or something
something.

Has the book title changed? Didn't it refrence The Smiths? Not that it matters. A protective cult interview that ignores the issue of Praying The Gay Away and James Maker's go-go dancing being offed the stage. Hilarious that he would think Morrissey would work with him when he's totally blown away the Dance of 7 Veils about Morrissey's HUMASEXUALITY. Etc.

"J: If Morrissey walked in here now and said ‘All right, Simon?’ what would you say?

S: I’d be straight over there. I’d say, ‘How are you? It’s been a long time!’ Then if he offered me a job drumming I’d say ‘Of course I would!’ I could handle it."

It isn't going to happen. He seems a genuinely sane person, though. Like me.

"S:Johnny and his guitar tech. Scrambled eggs on toast. Tea. Ketchup on the eggs. Yeah. But I’d have to make something different now he’s a vegan."

And Johnny Marr's been a Vegan (of sorts) for decades. Unlike Corpsetarian-Cheesetarian Crank-Fraud Morrissey. Is he OUT of the closet yet? I mean as a Vegan, not as a Humasexual? Or is he still 'posing as Veganite' asking for a metaphorical drubbing when #VegAnarchyInTheUK *drops* as the kids say.

So when they asked Johnny a while back if he read Moz's book, he stated he had too many books to get through first... yet he has read this newer book. My guess is he has already (secretly) read Autobiography, ha.

Always enjoy Julie's interviews.
Hope they all do get compiled in to a book as planned.
Regards,
FWD

Wow Simon Wolstencroft is a top bloke and a real sport! Is he going to bring out his autobiography?

Dale Hibbert has just released his autobiography. Johnny Marr is releasing his autobiography next year. Morrissey released his autobiography in 2013. Some years ago Andy Rourke tried to bring his autobiography out, but took money from the publishers instead and didn't produce a book. How did he get away with this?

Maybe Craig Gannon will be next?

I like Julie's interviewing style. I know she is a massive Moz fan and always brings it back whenever she can to Moz and The Smiths. However the 'what would you do if Moz came to dinner' question is getting a bit lame. You would swear Moz was the creator of the universe and people need to fall over themselves preparing everything perfectly etc. so that he is always catered for and happy. That's not a reasonable expectation and is part of the reason he always seems dissatisfied with people. He is not the center of the universe, because there isn't a center :)

No. As is clearly stated in the interview, which you have read, he has no plans to have his book published. Ever.

I'll try and find a link for you over next couple of days. Might be UK based though?

It will be a good book to read whilst we wait for the publishing odyssey of the 21st Century book. BrummieBoy's Veganarchy. I'm anticipating a cross between Brave New World and the Anarchist's Cookbook but suspect it will be more.Mills and Boon with swearing x
