"Obsessed: The Mexican Morrissey" - a film about Jose Maldonado - i-D

This was just wonderful. Lovely. He seems like a great guy.

Nicely put together.

obsessed: the mexican morrissey - i-D

Jose Maldonado, front man of The Smiths tribute band Sweet and Tender Hooligans, is an LA county lifeguard by day and the world’s greatest Morrissey impersonator by night. He’s got the voice, the looks, and a level of dedication that proves that love isn’t just a miserable lie. Join the Mexican Morrissey as he hosts his weekly Smiths-themed radio show, psyches himself up for a performance full of naked torsos and arm-waving, and shares stories of the time Moz turned the tables and stole his identity in return. We would go out tonight but we’re going to stay in and watch this instead.

Directed & Produced by Jordan Stokes

As a Mancunian I am impressed by how much Jose sounds like Morrissey but that's it. The mannerisms are too exaggerated and, of course, he doesn't look anything like Morrissey but it's all about being a fan and enjoying the music and there's no way I can fault Jose for that. Brilliant.

I think he is ace. I can't see what folk's problem is with him.

He's a very awkward DJ.

I just think it's weird to impersonate someone who is alive.

It's a bit odd making a "career" out of someone else's career in this way, I think. No doubt a big fan and that's cool. A bit too much of a caricature for me and I know it could have been just that he was in a bad mood or whatever, but I personally witnessed him acting like he was somebody and shining off a couple of fans at a show once. Just left me with a bad impression.

He's having a great time with a load of fans. What's not to like? I don't get the hate.

Well, he's actually kind of a condescending asshole. I could actually chalk it up to being caught at a bad time, etc., but the this is experience from being in his presence for several times. I guess it's probably all perspective though, as I am sure that there are many people who have found him nice and charming. On the other hand I have found him to be smarmy and arrogant. If I ever met him again I wouldn't immediately write him off and give him another chance to change my mind, but I find that scenario doubtful.

I cannot believe people are saying he has talent!!! It doesn't take talent to be a replica and sing and act exactly as someone else!! Plus I've met him before and he's full of himself..
