Smiths' frontman salutes Mersey football namesake

Singer Morrissey has paid tribute to his footballing namesake by performing concerts in front of an image of former Liverpool and Everton player Johnny Morrissey.

The ex-Smiths frontman, who is currently touring the UK, unveiled the new backdrop at the tour's opening night in Nottingham last week.

The huge image shows three portraits of the Liverpool-born footballer, who played 36 games for Liverpool before 'crossing the park' and joining Everton for £10,000 in 1962.

74-year-old Morrissey, who was known for his unflinching style of play, went on to make 259 appearances for the Toffees and scored the goal which took Everton to the 1968 FA Cup final.

His son, also called Johnny, had a successful career with Tranmere Rovers, making 470 appearances for Wirral-outfit between 1985 and 1999.

At one point Johnny Morrissey Jnr was a target for the mighty Manchester City when the Blues were second division club, in 1997.
Tranmere Rovers, thinking City were a wealthy club (far from it at the time) bumped up the value to 250K - I got excited about having ''Morrissey'' on the back of my City replica shirt...... but City rejected the high evaluation and looked elsewhere..... Morrissey later signed for Stockport County for 25K
