The Seminal Sparks on Brother Feuds, Being Bowie Contemporaries and Morrissey's Favorite Band - Billboard

Excerpt:

It was Morrissey who first talked you into playing Kimono My House in its entirety -- without the orchestra -- when he got you to play at the Meltdown Festival he curated 10 years ago. He's been such a vocal champion of Sparks, and has such a fanatical following. Do you ever get fans of his who come to your shows, thinking, "I don't know who they are, but if Morrissey says so…"

Russell: He came to the last show we did in L.A. at the Fonda Theatre, so there were two shows going on: Sparks on the stage and Morrissey in the audience. We like him. There's some kinship, not so much musically, even, but in how you're creating your own world with your music and especially lyrics. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth is another kind of unlikely fan. He came to this last show of Kimono with the orchestra in London. And then he came to the previous show, and we said, "We'll put you to work, too," so he played on one song.

It would be nice if Morrissey could talk himself into playing The Queen Is Dead and/or Vauxhall & I in it's entirety.

still laughing about your "I win" post.

Right now so many people are filling their pockets with sharpies and practicing their "I love you!" speeches.

(Valentines Day: done. :D Could somebody give him a teddy bear holding a satin heart and some chocolate from Bavaria or whatever the hell he likes too? Kthx.)

Sparks are/is a fairly crap band. Most of the bands Moz talks about are fairly rubbish, in my opinion anyway. The only bands which I like which he has mentioned through the years are: Siouxsie, Gene, Suede, Anna Calvi, Sack, James, Lloyd Cole. Most of those he went on to slag off eventually.

He will have Damon and company to shield him from all of those psychos.

Morrissey needs to take a tip from his own brain and do an album show. Viva Hate.

The thought of that got the pulse racing and then I remembered something very important !

THE PRESENT LINE UP ( the muppet band )
I would not part with hard earned to see the above mentioned let loose on those classics.

(Been away but now I'm back)

I respectfully disagree with your points about Sparks; in 2008 they played all 21 of their albums live. I don't think a 'fairly crap band' would even released 21 fantastic and varied albums, let alone have the determination to see them all through at a residency in Islington!

In addition to this, I don't think you can really even refer to Sparks as a band since they've had many iterations over the years. Sparks is more a vehicle for the Maels.

I think your post should have eluded more to the fact that they're not really your cup of tea, than the fact that they're 'crap'.

Also, if anyone is interested in keeping an ear to the ground, later this year they will release a collaboration album with Franz Ferdinand.

Further to the above, I've met Ron Mael twice and Russell once, and they're such nice people. Their work ethic is awesome, and they've only cancelled one gig since 1974 and that was in Ireland at the time of heightened tensions (and not their choice)

Wow, as forgiving as I am that puts Morrissey's record of cancellations into sharp relief…

I saw Sparks walking the streets of Cannes during the film festival in 2013. Perhaps they were there regarding a feature doc about the band, or their varied soundtrack work.

He was there last night. Stayed for the whole gig.

Not quite true. He was a few rows in front of his (orchestra left - his quiff was in my direct line of sight!) and he left about halfway into the second half.
