NME - 10 Classic Albums That Wouldn't Be The Same Without The Smiths' Meat Is Murder

suede and gene aside i dont think any of those albums should be sited as an influence. the las are a sixties throw back and when he said he seemed to rise above it all with the power of strum alone, yeah no, that would be the heroin.

also just noted this morning that meat is murder is the lowest ranking smiths album on all music.

I can't really hear it in any other album. I know The Smiths are supposed to have influenced a lot of other bands and most on that list cite them as influences but I struggle to connect that with their music - as it should be I guess. I'm pretty sure I've read both John Squire and Ian Brown dismissing Smiths influences before.

I've always felt that this album doesn't get the praise it deserves.

yeah i see morrissey sometimes in lyrics, brand new and ryan adams (who i wanted to win a grammy) but i dont see the smiths in a lot of bands. first suede album really had some marr influence to it. art is barbarism like note for note but they took it in there own direction after that.

Today (Feb. 11) is the 30th anniversary of the release of Meat Is Murder, and the NME have done a list of albums they say were influenced by it.

10 Classic Albums That Wouldn't Be The Same Without The Smiths' ‘Meat Is Murder’ - NME.com
30 years ago today (February 11), The Smiths honed the rough-hewn sound of their debut into a darker, more socially conscious second album ‘Meat Is Murder’ and their initial blaze of outsider excitement coagulated around the bullied, the beaten, the terminally lonely and the militantly vegetarian.

Why are Oasis always mentioned in the same breath as The Smiths? They were shite.

because theyre both just so english and well known. the first two oasis albums and the b-sides album were both good if very very unoriginal both in terms of chords and music as well as image and style. talk tonight is a great song that sounds like someone taking coke for the first couple of times and ready to open up with there new honestly and epiphany and clarity. immature but an incredibly sweet song with some very touching lyrics. dont know if its about his mother or about his lover but its terribly sweet

Sorry - I just don't see it. The Smiths were superb because of Morrissey's lyrics/as a performer and Johnny Marr's exquisite guitar playing (particularly early on). Plus Rourke and Joyce who were a great rhythm section.

For me Oasis possess absolutely none of that and it is just lazy journalism to compare them as they both hail from Manchester.
