Morrissey bans meat from his Belfast show at the Odyssey Arena: Heaven knows we're miserable now... - BelfastTelegraph.co.uk

Excerpt:

In an unprecedented move, the Belfast venue has warned staff that vegetarian food only will be allowed during the ex-Smiths star's show.

Up to 10,000 fans are expected to attend the performance with tickets currently available for around £50.

The move by Morrissey to stop revellers eating any meat while at the show has been branded as "bizarre" and "silly tokenism".

Animal rights activists defended his strong pro-vegan stance. Earlier this week an email was sent to all staff at the Odyssey Arena entitled 'Morrissey catering stipulation'.

...The email was leaked to the BBC Nolan Show. Businessman and commentator Jeffrey Peel criticised Morrissey's request, describing it as "celebrity nonsense".

"We're the backbone, no pun intended, of the meat industry in the UK," he said.

"Northern Ireland meat producers produce the beef which goes into McDonald's burgers, we slaughter more chickens than just about any other part of the United Kingdom.

"It seems absolutely bizarre that his fans, probably 99% of which eat meat, should be denied the opportunity to eat it the night of the concert.

"He can insist his fans don't eat meat on the evening, it probably won't do them much harm, but the fact is they'll probably leave the concert and merrily chomp through beef and chicken and the rest after the concert."

Animal rights activist John Carmody defended the star: "What I would say is Morrissey feels incredibly strongly about cruelty to animals and he feels incredibly strongly about animals in factory farms," he said. "I think he's standing by his morals on this particular one."

He added: "I wouldn't say he's imposing his morals. He's ensuring his hands are clean of any animal suffering which is caused."
...

If you are a Morrissey fan, why would you even debate this? He should do this at all the venues he plays. At least he isn't a hypocrite like Paul McCartney, when he makes sure that all the McDonalds are open at the venues so he can get his cut of the food concessions.

I don't think any Mexicans are going to make this show in Belfast, because there would be no way to control all the bacon wrapped hot dog carts in the parking lot.

Who eats at a concert anyways?

That was my first thought, too. We usually grab a bite to eat prior to the show to make a whole event out of it. OR we'll grab something light on the way home and use that time to discuss the show and savor the meal (and the company). It's better than eating whatever half-assed, overpriced, carnival-type food item (meat or otherwise) that is being served up at a venue.

And, if staving off food intake for 1.5 hours is really a massive problem for people, I've heard that bananas, apples, protein bars and almonds are delicious, filling and highly portable.

I'll take the other side, and suggest that in order to make sure I arrived on time at The Mann Theater in Philly we were there right at supper time. It is an outdoor venue and whilst KY was doing whatever it is she does on stage we sat at the back of the venue and enjoyed a nice shrimp taco under the setting sun. Good drink, food and music in the outdoors are an excellent combination in my book. Not in every circumstance but I really enjoyed it.

I was there. ;) The weather was beautiful that day. I was unaware that they served food at The Mann...let alone shrimp tacos. Ya learn somethin' new every day.

Good for him. Jeffrey Peel sounds like a f***en idiot.

Yeah...the food was up the hill wayyyyyy in the back.

I believe I read on here somewhere that you are planning to go to the DE festival. I will give you that "festival" food is most likely anything but festive, and the port-a-potty situation is not one that I would relish either. At least guys can stand to pee...although there is such a thing as "hovering" that ladies on occasion employ as my sisters brought to my attention. :squiffy:

The same f***ers who talk all the way through Moz singing and could name approx 3 of his songs.

And make endless trips to the bar to buy overpriced beer in plastic cups, which they spill over people as they worm through the crowd. Silly isn't it? Arena shows are shit.

That's nothing. I saw Oasis at Knebworth and the Lads were pissing into their empty cups and pouring it onto the grass!

remember death for no reason is murder, exactly like meat coffee chocolate ect they are cancer carcinogens and everytime you eat them your body sets of a toxic immune response and there is nothing you can do about it.........storage

Morrissey is the ultimate anti-vegan charlatan. He is indeed 'standing by his morals' on this one, as he is entirely delusional and bankrupt with regard to 'animal rights'. Throw some more cheese at the eejit when he steps onstage. He is a total charlatan, a fraud and a laughing stock when it comes to 'animal rights'. Is there a Pestana hotel in Belfast for this calf-murdering cheese-eater to stay in?
