"The Smiths' Meat Is Murder is nauseating to vegetarians and carnivores alike" - The A.V. Club

wow that was unusually poorly written as he didnt make much of a case for his argument other than i like catchier more uptempo pop oriented music. i mean how soon is now is very good musically but the lyrics are just so so, a fun play on words with no other meaning than i am a person with human needs. it doesnt hold much emotional weight imo. he didnt make much of a case for his argument. i will say, as an aside, that the bassline to barbarism is reason enough he shlould have had a royalties stake and why marr is not the sole reason for the music of the smiths. one of many. i should also say that marr frequently tells people who mistake his guitar parts for roukes basslines that he should get the credit for that so i have no problem with marr and idolize him to death. it just bgets to me the simple myth that people wanna believe

I'll go you one extra and say Barbarism and MiM at the end of the album is a f***ing disaster and spoil what is a fantastic LP. Everything up until that point is perfect.

The first time I saw the cover for "Meat is Murder" (in 1985, when it was new) it took my breath away. The moment I heard the song I knew that Morrissey had (once again) managed to convey something unsettling that rang very true, and went very deep.

If you don't like a song then don't listen to it. The only reason to rail against it (especially after thirty years) is because it still gets under your skin which is, I suspect, exactly what Morrissey had intended. The song is nauseating, and for good reason.

75% vegetarian ?????, "how soon is now" musically okay, but lyrically "so so" ?????, "it doesnt hold much emotional weight" ??????
I could go on,but why bore everyone !!!
As so elequently put by my fellow member "anaesthesine",it is a protest song that has stood the test of time.
1984-2015,100% staunch, loyal support, and i don't need anyone to tell me the error of my ways.
P.s. As i have stated in a previous post.........reveal yourself !!!!!!,and stop hiding behind anonymity !!!!!
EVRYONE IS ENTITLED TO HER/HIS OPINION,BUT PLEASE TAKE A SECOND TO THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE WRITING BEFORE PUTTING FINGER TO PAD !!!

musically very good was what i typed and yeah the lyric doesnt speak me but i like the word choice and phrasing etc. why do you want me to register, does it make something easier for you ro something. i think i already told you who i was in the introduction thread you had and theres already more than enough pics of me here all with links to my wifes social media accounts that have me and our lives all over them so why register. i dont understand your desire to see me do it

For me, Meat Is Murder is the Smiths album that means the most. Johnny was really coming into his own as a musician (open tuning on the opening track, and lightning fingers to go with it), and TJIFA is swooning. What's always fascinated me about this album is that Nowhere Fast was going to be a single, but was never released. Not sure why.

Yeah but not because I feel disgust or shame or guilt about meat eating. But because the song is meaningless. Meat is not murder. Murder is a legal term which only applies to humans. Abortion is not murder--either--according to law.

How one feels about MIM is entirely personal. Reviews and catty comments really don't matter. Some people do look at killing innocent animals as murder, some don't. We all have the right to believe whatever we want. At the end of the day, that's all that matters, anyway. I was unable to listen to the title track when I was younger because it did make me feel very uncomfortable. It was a haunting song with beautiful vocals, but because I was, at the time, eating meat, I couldn't listen to it. It was only after I became a vegetarian that I could play it, but it was never easy. Still isn't. I think Anaesthesine said it best.

The rest of album...magnificent. These are my favorite tracks. I can't think of anyone else who could have penned such greatness.

Unfortunately mate, reviews do,especially when they are talking garbage.
As i stated ",everyone is entitled...etc...etc... ",but sometimes, opinions are plainly wrong, and for the sake of the author, should be nipped in the bud.
Some comments by fellow members and guests defy logic, and must surely be posted just to antagonise the majority.
To those individuals,i genuinely feel sorry for them.
Come on now.....75% vegetarian ????

If my memory still serves me, I believe that 'Nowhere Fast' was set to be the lead single off the album. It was "replaced" by 'How Soon Is Now' as Rough Trade belatedly tried to cash in on the popularity of the song which of course, had already been released as an extra track on the 12" single of 'William......' and then on 'Hatful Of Hollow'.
When it then topped John Peel's (listeners) Festive Fifty in 1984, it was decided to finally release it as a single in its own right. Geoff Travis had originally not been keen on the song at all*. Sales were disappointing which was hardly a surprise as it had already been on two recent releases.
By the time that another single was needed, such was Morrissey & Marr's prolific song-writing output that 'Shakespeare's Sister' was already recorded and ready for release.

*Personally, I think Morrissey has been over-critical of Geoff Travis but THAT definitely was a his biggest mistake.

Oh I know, don't you hate when a vocal minority dissents from the majority opinion? So frustrating. ;)

don't be annoyed, this unmeaningless article is not worthy of a comment, author is 75% vegetarian

Honestly, if Meat is Murder was about a different topic I doubt it would get all the hatred it does. It says more about the listener than the song--even if the listener is "75% vegetarian."

yeah i agree. i dont think people like there idol to look down on them if they happen to be meat eaters. i mean hes got tons of very slow meandering songs that fans rave about. meat is murder is my fav smiths album though and is the best produced imo. i also agree with skinny that the guitar playing opened up and flourishes through this album, headmaster being a fine fine example. thay also had craig for this period, or shortkly after it i think, as well which filled out the sound for a lot of that tour.

also moody if youre referring to me being one to try and antagonize, nothing i post here has a conscious second agenda. theres no point to it or in trying to antagonize anyone as there no reward to it

Not when the 'vocal minority' is dissenting from the majority opinion just for the sake of it, and to get attention, because they live on their own in Arizona and have to fill their days somehow. So it's not frustrating at all then, in fact, it only invokes feelings of pity from me. Which I'm sure is not the desired reaction. Is it? Does this reaction frustrate *you*? LOL!

All the best,
The Truth Seeker

It's my favourite album. For me, this album is as good lyrically as any other, full stop. I don't know if any song on it would have made a great impact as a single though.

As for the original article, the fact that so many people allegedly gave up eating meat after hearing it says to me that he's talking utter bollocks.

headmaster makes a good single. that opening guitar riff is hypnotic and it kinda sums up or encapsulate what the smiths could be seen to be about at that time. also maybe what she said is hooky enough to put people past him talking about her dying from smoking
