Lloyd Cole's signed copy of 'Meat Is Murder'

The self centred, arrogant, pose given by mr.cole junior sums it up !!!
Like father like son springs to mind.
"rattlesnakes",in my humble opinion was excellent, with "easy pieces" trailing a little behind.
What has always amazed me about lloyd, and his lovely hair was the way he wanted his audience to percieve him {i have seen the commotions twice}.
To me he would always try to be more intelligent than he actually was!!!!
He would quote eva marie saint on one line, and simone de beauvoir in the next !!!.
It was all very clever, but i always thought that he "tried" too much.
I FORGOT TO ADD, I MET LLOYD,AND A COUPLE OF HIS "COMMOTIONS",DURING THE "MAINSTREAM" TOUR,IN A BAR IN LIVERPOOL.
WHILST THE 2 "COMMOTIONS" CAME ACROSS AS GENUINELY NICE PEOPLE,WHO WERE JUST HAPPY TO BE IN A SUCCESSFUL BAND,LLOYD SEEMED DISTANT,AND VERY ALOOF.
IN HIS SINGLE "MY BAG",HE STATES THAT HE "SUFFERS FOR HIS ART".........I THINK THAT THE LINE IS MAYBE TAKEN TOO LITERALLY BY MR.COLE.

I've met Lloyd twice and he was lovely. Can't imagine him walking off stage after 5 songs either.

And his kid is a looker.

James really is the most Morrissey-esque lyric Lloyd had written, so no surprises it was Morrissey's favourite.

"Ugly children with poor complexions and greasy hair
Receive no concessions and it's a heartless world
And it's a thoughtless heartless world

Oh James, oh you're a terrible child, hide yourself away
From furnished accommodation with a view and window seat

You swear she really is the best thing that you have ever seen
But your heart is in the wrong place
Cover your face and despair yourself away
Oh you're impossible, James, hide yourself away

And it's a sin to be a saint, and you're impossible, James
And it's impossible to accept that she's impossible
And as a consequence you lock yourself away
And it's a crime to be alive and be alone and be content to be

Oh James, oh you're a terrible child, hide yourself away
And in the morning when you wake, nothing will have changed"

Posted on Lloyd's Bookface.
His son pictured here with the aforementioned record.....he's a dead ringer for his pops.

From Lloyd>
"What is weird, with memory, for me anyway, is how people, places, scenarios, incidents can be lost, seemingly forever, and then with some magical trigger they are back... M and I met when we had both finished our debut albums and we were working towards sophomore offerings. He came to our Dominion Theatre show. He played me Meat Is Murder on cassette in his Kensington flat. I'm sure I found something positive to say but it couldn't have been easy. I played him rough mixes from Easy Pieces. He said James was my masterpiece..."

Thank you for posting this. I have to say I am not at all familiar with the music of Lloyd Cole, but this is a beautiful lyric, and I can see why Morrissey would find it captivating. As a teenager with a very poor complexion I can really relate to this. Luckily (as you have so wisely bolded above) I was content to be alone and that helped quite a bit...The Smiths played a large part in this. "And in the morning when you wake, nothing will have changed"...very true....but after hundreds and thousands of mornings much does. I think this wisdom applies to many of life's problems.

It's a reasonable bet there'll be no magazine 30th Anniversary special celebrating Easy Pieces.

Seen him a a couple of times a few years back and again doing his accoustic stuff a couple of years ago, he may not be as good a writer as Morrissey but he has a great voice. Not sure why people feel the need to be nasty with their comments?

It is a bit of a cockish comment to make, coming from somebody with middling talent.

its his view, is he not allowed one? Not everyone is a fan.

I think Charlie's reacting against Lloyds bitchiness. It's his view, is he not allowed one? A very reasonable view to have, at that.

Yes appreciate tHat but we don't know the background, he may have a valid reason for the bitchiness.

Surface versus Samsa. The Earth shall sh...rug.

If Morrissey played the track Meat Is Murder, rather than the entire album Meat Is Murder, perhaps Cole's reaction is more understandable. It's a tough listen today, let alone then. If someone played it to you for the very first time today, what would you say? It's got a good beat?

ive been a fan of lloyd for a very long time, seen him plenty of times, but that comment from lloyd in this day and age ? his last couple of records are dreadful, amateur-ish sounding crap. he lost his way a long time ago, and his best of the past 10 yrs barely stacks up to morrissey's worst. he has resorted to playing his back catalog with a bluegrass band. that is just f***ing sad. his jerk off son should treasure that record, i know i would.

I'll have to "judge" him based on the information he himself is giving out. And if he's just being a dick, then that's what I would call him.

I don't really get why so many people find the title track of said album to be so incredibly difficult. The music's atmospheric, moody, dark and pretty beautiful. The message of the lyrics is easy to sympathise with (unless you're a hunter, I guess. Or a...butcher. Or some other rabid meat fanatic). It's obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but neither is Morrissey in general.

The music to Meat is Murder is great, but the lyrics have to be a contender for the worst in the Smiths canon. Nothing to do with the subject matter (I'm a vegetarian), they're just not very good lyrics.
