“You’ll never guess which pop band has the most sophisticated song lyrics of all time” - The Mirror Online
Dec 03, 2014 20:48 By Martin Bagot, Patrick Scott
The Mirror’s data unit analysed various song lyrics and calculated how many years would have to be spent in education in order to understand them

Today in weird news:

“Depeche Mode have the most sophisticated lyrics out of any of the UK’s best selling bands.

The 80s electronic band came top after the Mirror’s data unit analysed their lyrics and calculated how many years fans would need to spend in education to understand them.

The average Depeche Mode song required 10.3 years in education – the equivalent to a 15-year-old.

This was the higher than legendary UK music acts such as The Beatles, David Bowie and Queen.

One of Depeche Mode’s most sophisticated songs was Macro, the opening lines to which are: “Overflowing senses, heightened awareness, I hear my blood flow, I feel its caress.

“Whispering cosmos talking right to me, unlimited, endless, God breathing through me.”

Elton John came in second place followed by Dire Straits, Pet Shop Boys and David Bowie. Robbie Williams was a surprise inclusion at seventh.
The analysis compared the lyrics to over 6,000 different songs by UK acts.

Each song was scored on the readability of its lyrics using the Coleman Liau Index and the SMOG index, two algorithms used to determine the difficulty of school texts.

An average was taken of each song’s score in both of these tests to fix on its final score before each artist was given an average score based on all of their lyrics.

The least complex lyrics out of all 6,093 songs was for ABC (Freeform) by the Eurythmics, which is just the 26 letters of the alphabet spoken one after the other.

The 10 bands with the most sophisticated lyrics were:
Band // Years of Education Required to Understand Average Song // Letters Per Word
Depeche Mode // 10.3 // 3.8
Elton John // 9.3 // 3.7
Dire Straits // 9.2 // 3.7
Pet Shop Boys // 9.1 // 3.7
David Bowie // 8.7 // 3.7
Rod Stewart // 8.7 // 3.7
Robbie Williams // 8.6 // 3.6
Ub40 // 8.5 // 3.7
Queen // 8.5 // 3.7
Def Leppard // 8.5 // 3.6

The 10 bands with the least sophisticated lyrics were:
Band // Average Readability Score // Letters Per Word
Led Zeppelin // 4.4 // 3.5
The Who // 5.3 // 3.8
Smiths // 5.5 // 3.6
Beatles // 5.7 // 3.5
Jethro Tull // 6.1 // 4
Joy Division // 6.5 // 3.9
Fleetwood Mac // 6.5 // 3.6
The XX // 6.7 // 3.5
Paul McCartney (solo) // 6.7 // 3.6
Coldplay // 6.9 // 3.6

The ten songs with the longest words on average were:
Band // Song // Letters Per Word
U2 // Ito Okashi // 6.8
Oasis // Manuk Dadali // 6.1
Coldplay // Chinese Sleep Chant // 5.9
Robbie Williams // Minnie The Moocher // 5.9
Depeche Mode // Macro // 5.6
Genesis // The Dance Of The Giant Hogweed // 5.5
David Bowie // Band Intro // 5.4
David Bowie // Law // 5.3
Spice Girls // My Strongest Suit // 5.3
Eurythmics // Jennifer // 5.2″

Kudos to Martin Gore! If this undeniable fact of praiseworthy news in a British newspaper won’t boost DM’s reputation in the UK, then nothing will.

Totally nonsense ! Smiths, Beatles and Fleetwood Mac have less sophisticated lyrics ?? Huh. :swear:

Well, thankfully this analysis means absolutely less than nothing. Now, a most moving, relatable, intelligent lyrical analysis would be more on point when considering Morrissey and The Smiths.

Re: Article: The Smiths in 'least sophisticated song lyrics' group according to Mirror analysis - Th

Morrissey wrote in plain spoken English. He was never pretentious. It was how he arranged those words in an emotional and poetic way that gave them their strength and depth.

I think this study was only done about the vocabulary and not the meaning. Who gives a f*** about a large vocabulary? How you think about the words said is much more important than the words used to convey what is said.

You think Ub40 and Def Leppard are more sophisticated than Morrissey? Really? f*** off!

Morrissey has always said that his lyrics are supposed to be simple and without unnecessary flourish. This makes sense.

Replace "sophisticated" with "convoluted" or "opaque" and you get a better description of this "study's" results.

Haha! Bowie least sophisticated: "Band Intro" and "Law?
Is this made by a machine?

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever read. From start to finish it's completely stupid.

These Depeche Mode lyrics rival quantum physics in their complexity....

The handshake
Seals the contract
From the contract
There's no turning back
The turning point
Of a career
In Korea, being insincere
The holiday
Was fun packed
The contract
Still intact

Any poll that considers these lyrics (that weren't even written by the singer anyway) has to be daft....

Hidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehi)
Hodehodehodeho (Hodehodehodeho)
Hedehedehedehe (Hedehedehedehe)
Hidehidehideho (Hidehidehideho)

A hidehidehidehidehidehidehi (Hidehidehidehidehidehidehi)
Hodehodehodehodehodehodeho (Hodehodehodehodehodehodeho)
Whoah (Whoah)...

Here's a long word

Absolutepileofoldtoshthatisntworthreadingorcommentingonreally

Have you listened to DM's song..."Boys say Go"? Ugh, that is just some straight-up garbage...it's their early stuff, I'll grant them that, but wow...it's terrible.

Whoa, slow down there fella...I have a few more years of ed-you-cay-shun to get through before I could decipher that enigma....

aww man, you beat me to it and here I snagged the "best portion" of that song:

And I just can't seem to get enough of

I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough

I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough

I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough

I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough
I just can't get enough

And when it rains

anyways, having said that, I think DM is a great band, but a great band to dance to first and foremost  some great lyrics sprinkled in there, particularly on:
jukebox.php

:blushing:
but more sophisticated than the The Smiths lyrics  the idea is so lame it makes me think the article was written as a troll

Re: Article: The Smiths in 'least sophisticated song lyrics' group according to Mirror analysis - Th

Just Can't Get Enough and Boys Say Go! were written by Vince Clark, not Martin Gore !!!!!
Gahan (the singer) didn't write lyrics at the time.... so ?

It is easy to take a part of the lyrics to dissect. We can do the same about the songs of The Smiths or Mozz.

FYI : Leave In Silence (1982) : Falklands war ; Everything Counts (1983) : about globalization... already ; Shame, Something To Do, New Dress, etc.....
And the winner is : "i will say that depeche mode do have some good lyrics even in there early days like little 15 from music for the masses" MFTM... early days.... ???? WTF !!! MFTM is the 6th album of DM in 7 years.... "there early days", very funny.

No need to spit on DM's lyrics.

PS: I listen DM since 1985, The Smiths since 1986 and naturally Morrissey

Words are very unnecessary, They can only do harm

Pleased to see that famous Bowie song "Band Intro" on the list. I'm always singing along to that:

"On guitar, Mick Ronson /
On drums, Woody Woodmansey /
On bass, Trevor Bolder."

Those were the days.

i will stand by and watch you pricks slag off my favourite band.

having said that, no, i don't believe their lyrics are more "sophisticated" than anyone else's, including The Smiths or Morrissey solo, but who are we to argue with SCIENCE?

and lol at people literally posting an example of one song (from thirty years ago) as conclusive proof DM are not sophisticated. well done guys x
