BandAID vs Morrissey

They should have covered OMD's 80s classic Ebola Gay.

Bunch of self-serving tax avoiding wankers encouraging us to part with our hard-earned dosh for another media created scare story.

And the monies raised will end up in some corrupt officials' pockets anyway. c***s the lot of them

Well, much as I despise being blackmailed into feeling guilty about not donating, it's not really a media created scare story. From a humanistic standpoint, thousands are dying and despite our separation by distance and relation, personally, I feel sad about it. Hence I've given some dosh. We don't really need to buy a song to feel we've done our bit. In my opinion.

I'm totally with Moz on that. I can remember this in the 80's with "USA for Africa" and in France "Song for Ethiopia", i would have hope i wouldn't have to bear this torture once again in my life...

Please don't be so vulgar.

I was around at the original. Morrissey was right. Geldof is a thoroughly dislikeable drunk, obnoxious, ego on legs. The legacy of live aid has been the Bono-isation of politics, third way bollocks and no real change for thirty feckin years.

And how many millions are killed by malaria? No charity record for that though....

People here say Moz owns a house in Switzerland. Is he a "tax avoiding wanker"?

For the original, didn't Morrissey say that he refused to be in the same room as so many bad haircuts?

He's not imploring me to part with my hard-earned cash whilst Rome burns is he? And ensuring that he can roll out another Boomtown Rats tour in the back of it.

I believe they say charity begins at home but you wouldn't imagine that in the UK people are dependant on foodbanks. In the 21st Century.

And the title track of the new album explicitly states Morrissey's tax avoidance position so I give him credit for being honest.

It's a very good point. It's there all the time, and doesn't come and go in the collective consciousness.

Or is it just not fashionable enough for Saint Bob, Bono Midge and the gang? Perhaps they could give up all their worldly possessions. A cynic might say that those involved may be hoping that the record keeps the X-Factor release from being Christmas Number one. A cynic may also say it has the faint whiff of desperation.

I'll carry on giving money via direct debit to charities that are dedicated to alleviating third world issues rather than through a charidee record which helps stroke musicians' egos.

Oh and I apologise for being vulgar but personally I find this BandAID 30 malarkey vulgar in the extreme

An excellent point, aren't something like half a million people killed a year?

Still, as it's mostly black people, they're not going to pass it on to us and it's not topical...

It always annoyed me when mega rich pop stars got all preachy telling everyone to give money away, especially as someone has mentioned they've often not been shy in dodging their taxes. It's hard to argue that Band Aid didn't do a lot of good though.

Having a tax agreement is (still) perfectly legal in Switzerland, I believe the comment was just ironic. And using a song title as evidence of Moz's stance in tax matters is hilarious.

I wasn't being entirely serious and I was actually referring to the lines in the song.

Work hard
And sweetly pay your taxes
Never asking what for

Oh you poor little fool ~ ergo
