Mark Gardener of Ride Interview - The Smiths mention

i do like ride but those bands sound nothing alike which is funny to me. rides third album canrival of light was there best imo and its a shame no one knows that album like the first two which i find to be just alright.

I think his point was that they were geeky art students and The Smiths made them believe they too could be in a band.

probably. my comment was made before i clicked the link as i just read the byline. i also think more people should listen to carnival of light.

Actually played it in the car when I went out for dinner. I really do like it, it just really starts to stray from the sound by that point.

for sure it does but i was never a fan, a big one ill say, of the original sound and liked where they took it. carnival of light made them a band i care about vs them being just an anecdote of shoegaze i know about. it kinda bugs me that for the reason you state, which is completely fair, that carnival gets overlooked

At 9:15 of this interview, Mark says The Smiths is what brought him and Andy Bell together to form Ride

A great band that only got worse with time much like Morrissey. People cannot see the musical connection and of course there is none. People see bands and artists and it makes them wanna start a band themselves. Ride went from brilliant shoegaze to some sort of blues outfit.

I love Ride and how down to earth Mark is. Just that much more amazing that The Smiths were a part of bringing one of my favourite bands together. I really like Carnival of Light as well, I think it was just a bit of an unexpected shift that threw some people off. I remember reading somewhere that even the band referred to it as Carnival of Shite ... Crown of Creation remains a fave of mine.

I won't lie, I'd jump up and down like a little girl if there was a Ride reunion!!!
