Rare "Certain People I Know" proof artwork on eBay + others

Re: Rare proof artwork on eBay

It's pretty tricky, the listing description. is the seller selling the original artwork or just a repro? I don't know what he meant by "glossy photo paper"... and the pricings...

It's a printer's proof (to do a final check on copy, position, bleeds, spot colors, etc. before going to press)—so it's not original artwork or a final printed piece, it's what would come in between. I'm guessing either an Iris print or dye sublimation on coated paper based on the era of the proofs he has.

He's got a bunch of Morrissey proofs for sale. Pretty neat.

Was the Union Jack cover of CPIK ever actually printed?

OK...thanks for the explanation. So it's like the red William sleeve?(I m thinking it's not). If you fold up this printer's proof, you get a sleeve too?

I'm not a collector so I don't know enough about the red William sleeve to answer the first part of your question, but in the photos of it that have been posted here, it looks like it actually went to press...it doesn't look like a proof to me. (But I don't know.)

But yes, if you trimmed these proofs using the crop marks as guides, you could theoretically fold them into sleeves/inserts. They would be at the exact size as a final printed piece, since part of the purpose of making a proof is to check measurements, etc.

The Certain People I Know Union Jack sleeve was pictured in the (i think it was Q) Smiths special a few years ago.
I would guess it got shelved after the Union Jack waving Madstock festival appearance.

As for the William, it could quite possibly have started out as a proof test print before someone decided to cut and fold it and make it into a proper sleeve.

For such items to emerge after all these years is good to see, lets hope they go to good homes.

Has anyone seen these? The Certain people I know 12" alternate sleeve is the most obscure, never seen or heard of it before. Valuation?

But what does "original artwork" mean when you're talking about a proof? These are definitely one-dimensional printer proofs (as the description says), not paste-ups. I think what the seller means when they say "not prints" is that they're not reproductions, they're the original printer's proofs. Of course they have to have been printed in order to appear the paper. :) A proof by definition isn't a piece of original artwork, it's a pre-press representation of what the finished piece will look like.

I don't think there's any deception in the description, it's just worded strangely. I think these proofs are really cool to see this long after the fact, usually they just wind up in the trash. They're cool to me even just as pre-press artifacts.
