Morrissey interview in El Mundo (Spain); cancer treatment mention

An anonymous person writes:

'Ya descansaré cuando esté muerto' - El Mundo

Notice this: "Me han raspado tejidos cancerosos en cuatro ocasiones ya, pero qué más da"-->using google translator: "I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but who cares"

Disconcerting. :squiffy: Hopefully this is one of those times where cancer means something else in Spanish.

Cáncer in Spanish has the same meaning as cancer in English

Re: New interviw: El Mundo (Spain) I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but wh

Oh dear.

Re: New interviw: El Mundo (Spain) I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but wh

Hm...I don't like this one bit.

Re: New interviw: El Mundo (Spain) I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but wh

I heard he had cancer a few months ago. Barrett's esophagus can turn into cancer, unfortunently.

But if he was terminally ill he would be starting a tour today, so relax.

I asked my wife to read this...the title of the article translates to "I'll rest when I'm dead"....I like that. Like Warren Zevon's song, "I'll sleep when I'm dead".

The question about his health reveals he's had some cancerous tissues scraped several times. No indication what kind or how serious.

If you get attention soon enough it can be controlled. After a lifetime in the sun, working, fishing and playing ball..... I've personally had so much cut, scraped and burned off of my body that I look like I've been in a knife fight with Pahoo Ka Ta Wa. ....Still here....still ill, and hopefully Morrissey will be here for many moons to come.

maybe he claims it's cancer to invoke sympathy for all the shows canceled and for those that will be canceled. he's narcissistic enough.

Re: New interviw: El Mundo (Spain) I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but wh

According to Google translate (+ my own interpretation):

Your fans have been concerned in regards to your health, in recent months you have been hospitalised and have had to cancel several concerts. How are you feeling?

They have scraped cancerous tissues four times already, but whatever. If I die, then I die. And if I don’t, then I don’t. Right now I feel good. I am aware that in some of my recent photos I look somewhat unhealthy, but that’s what illness can do. I'm not going to worry about that, I'll rest when I'm dead.

Re: New interviw: El Mundo (Spain) I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but wh

Well, there aren't that many reasons to go to Lublin, but as I mentioned on the 7th of September:

In other news, Lublin has a fine oncology hospital apparently...

Oh Christ I feel awful now.

Morrissey on his upcoming novel: Probablemente se edite el año próximo y con suerte podré dejar de cantar para siempre, ¡lo cual haría feliz a mucha gente!

It will probably be released next year and with luck I could give up singing forever, which would make a lot of people happy!

My sister is a sunbathing addict. She was just diagnosed with basil cell carcinoma (non-malignant) skin cancer for the second time and needs to have it removed. But the procedure isn't really scraping, it's cutting it out and stitching it up. The scraping part makes me think it might be related to his throat. Someone mentioned Barrett's Esophagus can lead to cancer when that was all going down. :(

Re: New interviw: El Mundo (Spain) I have been scraping cancerous tissues four times already, but wh

Sorry for the delay, these things take time. Brushed-up translation of the interview below:

“I'll rest when I'm dead”
  • “I do not hate people, I am a kind and sensitive man”
  • “I cannot stand David and Victoria Beckham”
  • At age 55, the English musician prepares his first novel
JAVIER BLÁNQUEZ Barcelona
6 October 2014

Steven Patrick Morrissey (1959) is one of those people who divide the world in two: those who worship him as one of the most brilliant pop living composers of the 20th century - the legacy of The Smiths continues unfading 30 years later - and those who disparage him for never having reached the height in his solo career, and instead of cultivating his musical work, devoting more effort to oral invective, the defense of animal rights, and the narcissistic worship of his own figure, for which he has earned being labeled as bigmouth on more than one occasion.

But Morrissey is again active and on several fronts: his Autobiography (Penguin Classics, 2013) already published in England, he’s writing his first novel, he has a new album since the spring - the tenth solo album, World peace is none of your business - and starts his new European tour next week beginning in Lisbon (October 6) and stops in Madrid (October 9, Barclaycard Center) and Barcelona (October 10, Sant Jordi Club). Before starting rehearsals, Morrissey agreed to answer some questions and, as always happens when he opens his mouth, every statement is an atomic bomb.

Q: You signed with the Harvest label to release this album, and a few weeks after its publication they dismissed you. What happened?

A: The usual, that no label that I have been on has been capable of bringing my music to the public. There was no kind of promotion, they always kept me hidden, and even so we have sold quite well. I complained about the treatment and the owner, Steve Barnett, decided to dismiss me. He does not like for artists to think. It was stupid, but his ego seems to be more important than the proper functioning of his business.

Q: You have always defined yourself as a self-sufficient man. You don’t need any social contact?

A: I have no social life, I don’t need it. I live quietly in solitude. Fun is an artificial construct, and if you don’t have a sex life (and I have none at all) it is impossible to deal with people, because people only talk about sex. If you do not have a partner, people look at you suspiciously.

Q: After writing your autobiography, you are now preparing your first novel. When will it be completed and what can you tell us about it?

A: It's coming along well, but it would be presumptuous of me to talk about something that is not finalized yet. It will probably be published next year and with luck I will be able to stop singing forever, which would make many people happy!

Q: The lyrics of your songs have a high poetic tone, but perhaps, for what it’s worth, prose would be something that suits you better. It would permit you to dedicate yourself to it completely and be a recluse, which is what you aspire to.

A: I understand well why many writers are lock themselves away forever. With their words they can recreate the actions that they couldn’t develop in real life, and not because they were dysfunctional, but because the human race is not empathetic all. To make true friends can take a lifetime, and at the same time, the more you know a person, the more they disappoint you. They say we are a civilized species, but I insist, turn on the television and you will see what we are: a bunch of crazy people in a global insane asylum.

Q: In one of the songs from the new album, The bullfighter dies, you condemn bullfighting. Will you take advantage of the concerts in Spain, especially in Madrid, since in Barcelona they are already abolished, to emphasize the issue?

A: The song itself says it all. Bullfights are completely unfair, because there is no real fight [Author’s note: in English it is said bullfight; 'fights with bulls']. The animal receives only punishment and ridicule, and is not given any option to fight. It's like those people who say they are hunters, like your King Juan Carlos, but all they do is shoot quietly from afar. It is cowardly and barbaric. Even a four year old child could do that. People who are cruel to animals often are so with people as well. King Juan Carlos had to have gone to jail for killing elephants, which is a protected species. It's what the law says. Why not him?

Q: In his defense of the rights of animals, is there any gray scale? Would you accept, for example, horse racing, or does that also seem cruel to you?

A: Animals are not something to be used for fun. Horse racing is also cruel: if a horse does not perform well in the race, the next day he is shot and killed. Why not the rider? He is as much to blame for the failure as the horse. Being human means to respond automatically to suffering. But some people do not respond. Queen Elizabeth II is fond of racing. Princess Anne eats horse meat and advocates the extermination of badgers. Princes William and Harry shoot everything that moves. The British Royal Family is obsessed with weapons and death.

Q: Why do you prefer cats among all animals?

A: They are independent, consistent and intelligent. Unlike dogs, they do not need you to pay them attention all the time. Most animals only ask for love and nothing else. When cows are taken to the slaughterhouse they beg for their lives sucking the hands of the men who are going to kill them. You will never see that in an ad for McDonalds.

Q: You spoke in favor of the “Yes” vote in the referendum in Scotland. Were you disappointed in the “No” victory?

A: Yes, because I like people to rise up against regimes. The BBC did everything possible to tilt the vote toward “No” and never reported on the potential benefits of an independent Scotland. The BBC heavily criticizes Russia and Syria because there is no democracy there, and they do not realize that they promote the same. They showed their horror when Putin sent Pussy Riot to prison for making music against the Government while at the same time preventing my song Ding-dong the witch is dead, celebrating the death of Margaret Thatcher, from being played on the radio. They speak in the name of democracy only when it suits them, but when it bothers them they disparage it. They use the word “extremist” only to discredit people they they don’t like.

Q: Are you aware of what is happening in Catalonia? Many people are also asking to vote as in Scotland.

A: I know they have banned bullfighting, so they have all my sympathy. But this topic is not discussed in England and I do not know much more. Nor is it spoken of in the US, because for Americans the rest of the world does not exist at all.

Q: Your fans are worried about your state of health, in recent months you have been hospitalized and have had to cancel several concerts. How are you feeling?

A: They have scraped cancerous tissues from me four times already, but who cares. If I die, then I die. And if not, then I don’t. Right now I feel good. I am aware that in recent photos I look unwell, but that is what illness does. I'm not going to worry about that, I’ll rest when I'm dead.

Q: You remain faithful to a very traditional kind of pop and are impervious to technology. Are you worried about becoming an antique?

A: I'm at an age when one should no longer be making music. Many composers of classical music died at age 34. And I'm still here, and nobody knows what to do with me. The audience that I have is very young, which leads me to think that the songs of the Smiths, as with those of the Ramones, are more significant now than before.

Q: In the past 15 years you have played very little in Spain: you did in Benicàssim and in Málaga, a long time ago. Why have you not come more often?

A: They have offered for me to sing in Spain often, and I always ask that they bring me to a theater and not an open field. But they tell me there are no opera houses in Spain. But let's see: And where does Stefano Palatchi sing then? In hip hop clubs? In roadside bars?

Q: In Benicàssim, in your 2006 concert, you performed many songs from the Smiths. Could the same happen in these upcoming shows?

A: I have never ignored that period of my career, I usually play those songs. But the repertoire that I’m going to sing doesn’t matter much, the nights always tend to go well.

Q: Which is the first person that comes to mind that you find particularly odious and useless for the rest of the world?

A: I do not hate people, I am a kind and sensitive man, but I can not stand David and Victoria Beckham. The tragic importance that the British media give this couple is what has made us a nation of zombies. They are nothing, but their egos are abnormally overdeveloped. Victoria never does anything, but she’s always busy, absorbed in her self-worship, like “McDonna” [author’s note: for Madonna, probably]. And her husband, well, he does not know how to speak English and his business is disgusting. He has a line of perfumes that have been previously tested on animals, as if animals are accustomed to wear cologne. Remember: if you buy his aftershave lotion you are supporting animal torture.

Some animal lover. Why does he always have to talk shit about dogs? He probably bangs on and on about animal rights but probably runs away when a dog approaches him.

:( Wish we had more info. Esophageal cancer is often fatal. Skin cancer? Not usually.

He's not exactly talking shit about dogs, but he is perpetuating wives tales. My dog is pretty low maintenance. If I had a yard and a dog door he'd not need me a bit. I'd rather dogs ran the world than cats.

Moz is an introverted loner. Dogs are extroverted social animals. Makes sense that he can't relate to dogs. He is a cat person.
