If that is true, and I remember with particular fondness his interview on The South Bank Show in 1987 as an example of him at his wittiest and most erudite, what the hell has gone wrong?
Well, as I said above, the last decent music journalist was around in the early 90s and then that's that. The whole music world turned Psyco (or is it SYCO) and Mercury went and EMI went (post Robbie William's £M's advance deal.) Then Sony went out and bought everything they could..
It cannot just be silly journalists. It is true he has had his problems with being, if not misquoted, then misunderstood in print, but the Morrissey of today, bucking the trend once more, but this time in getting less wise as he gets older, is a self made construct. That is him, or part thereof. It is the face he alone chooses to present to the world. He presents himself as, and I'm sorry to use the words that will follow him around until the grave, but they seem very apposite, truculent and unreliable. I've said before I would cross the road to avoid him. Off the top of my head I cannot think of a public figure I would rather avoid, and I'm including the Houses of Parliament.
You are entitled to your opinion.
I am sorry to read that though because the paragraph you (and many others) seem to misquote is "...truculent and unreliable where business interests were concerned" which also seemed to miss the point totally. Because the judge was half asleep, the judge seemed much more concerned about helping the legal aid client than getting at the truth. The judge also believed everything the legal-aid client said to him, which was not the truth at all. It was wrong.
You are entitled to your view, as much as the next man. It's just sad to see this view in print to be honest.
Look at the state of the world we live in now. Look at the ongoing wars now in 2014, in at least 7 countries. How thoughtful he is to care enough to sing and to speak out loud on these subjects, while he can. Before he retires to a cottage, beside an old textile mill, from memory.
I wanted World Peace to be a winner, but it turned out to be a melody free slog. I needed it to be an astounding return to the heights we know/knew he was capable of, because it was the only way I could forgive him the too numerous to mention examples of his ongoing spoken word imbecility.
That awful public persona is even infecting his older material for me now. I was listening to Shoplifters the other day, and as marvellous as it is, I still found myself thinking, "God, he's an idiot."
Maybe it is my musical background, but I was listening to Bullfighter and the instruments on that mix are just stunning. Without vocals it stands up. Boz and the gang did a fantastic job with MOUNTJOY, OBOE CONCERTO, ART-HOUNDS, ISTANBUL, ONE OF OUR OWN, EITLP and FORGIVE SOMEONE. JITW and KMAL are grower's in my opinion.
The album has some amazing instruments and guitars. Fantastic drumming. Great arrangements and the tempo is perfect.
Therefore, all things considered, I wouldn't think anyone, with any musical knowledge or taste at all, would back you up with a comment of WPINOYB as a "melody free slog." This is designed to be a joke, surely ?
My reply is that the last "slog" that I heard recently (in 2014) was on the Nicki Minaj album. Even then, it did have some good beats apart from the rhymes of "plasma" and "asthma" in track 2.
I don't agree with your comments. In fact, I have been laughing all day long since I read the "melody free slog" !
