Thanks for posting, brilliant stuff in there. Johnny sounds so young, amazing how these kids produced the quality that they did.

What a wanker Kent is/was. I'm only 15 minutes in and he's interrupted Johnny Marr in full flow about 15 times already, each time just as he sounded like he was on the verge of making an interesting point.

kent was always a jackass. funny bit is how much johnny looks like him

Yet another that's been on Smiths Torrents for ages. 03/2007 for this one.

Nick Kent Interview 1985

Paul knew Nick Kent from a while before we teamed up. In fact it was Paul who turned Nick onto the Smiths in early 84, by giving him some bootlegs. In 1985 Nick was hired to do a piece for the Face. During his meeting with the Smiths, he mentioned our Bootlegs and Johnny expressed an interest in getting some Byrds stuff. This basically gave us an opportunity to meet johnny, and resulted in us being on the guest list for subseqeunt tours. After the Meat is murder tour had finihsed, there wasn't much Smiths activity over the Summer in England. But sometime in June Paul turned up with this tape, which Nick had lent to him, of an interview he'd done with Johnny and Morrissey. I remeber listening to it as I duplicated cassettes up for our stall at Glastonbury that year.

I'd guess the interview took place before the Meat Is Murder tour took place. It's just Nick, Johnny and Morrissey sitting around having tea and discussing the Smiths and their Music. Both Smiths are very relaxed and the talk is much broader that other interviews of the time. Nick is obviously a big fan, and a very intelligent and knowlegeable guy about music. I think this makes the discussion much more interesting than say Radio interviews of the time, where Morrissey always sounds a bit defensive. The discussions are quite frank, and a couple of times Nick turns the tape off so one or other of the Smiths can say something they don't want on the record.

Don't know what it was recorded on, but nothing special. The recorder obvioulsy placed on a table a left. The tape has a fair amount of background noise, including the sound of the recorder itself. However, this has cleaned up reasonably well, so the 2 CDs are quite listenable. The 2nd one had much lower levels than the first, but I've tried to bring them up. I've put in track markers about every five minutes of so, although they don't match the topics below. Anyway hope you enjoy it.

My 2cents. It's great for hipsterdisco to post all this stuff for everyone to enjoy, see and share, but never referencing where it's from makes it looks like this stuff is new when it isn't. IMO, the stuff from Smiths Torrents needs to have a link back to the original posting. Speaking from first hand knowledge, it really isn't that difficult to do.

These two excerpts which have been available elsewhere for quite awhile appear to reflect this website's fall from being the conduit of interesting information into the online Jeremy Kyle human bearbaiting it has become.

Funnily enough I was looking at a thread from 2007 whilst having a shit today from users who don't populate this place anymore and the respect to one another was wonderful to behold, even if people had diametrically opposed views.

Anyway the 1999 Morrissey was wonderful.

Kent is a tedious former junkie who famously 'didn't get punk'. His interviewing skills are non existent and his writing very pedestrian … no wonder Sid Vicious tried to brain him. How this classic rock hippy ended up interviewing The Smiths is beyond me … Marr should have told him to shut the f*** up the second time he interrupted him.

Thanks for posting it though I know Histerdisco's exellent youtube channel,
there's a lot on different channels ' Smiths/Morrissey related' ,where one can
find stuff you never saw or heard before

on to Lisboa, the Worldpeace Tour starts tomorrow

'and they say he's mentall''... setlist!...

Agree totally. Nick Kent thinks he's as interesting as Johnny and Morrissey. Just shut up and let them talk, you hack!

That’s an incredibly insightful and intelligent interview by Nick Kent. His speculations are fascinating to hear. I love the way he asks several times about the identity of the first two songs they composed. Morrissey declines to answer in the end, but at least Kent pushed the question as far as he felt he could. Kent’s own comments are equally, if not more, revealing than those of Morrissey and Marr. Loved it.

In 2004/5 this site was a horrible place to be.
