Ryan Adams' new self-titled album Smiths-inspired

Ryan Adams' Moody, Smiths-Inspired Self-Titled Album - Rolling Stone
'Ryan Adams' influenced by Velvet Underground and the singer's struggles with Meniere's disease

Excerpt:

Ryan Adams has revealed his latest studio LP Ryan Adams a week early. Adams had previously unveiled the moody album tracks "My Wrecking Ball" and the Elvira-starring video for the single and album opener "Gimme Something Good," but now you can stream Ryan Adams in its entirety over at NPR.org. Adams told Rolling Stone that his 11-song self-titled affair, due out September 9, was inspired by the Smiths and the Velvet Underground as well as his struggles with the inner ear disorder Ménière's disease...

Given that this is the man who gave us crud like "Have you ever really loved a woman" from Robin Hood, this is really a very good album, with a lot of edge. The Smiths influence is tangible. Hats off, Ryan!

It's a really good album on the first couple of listens.

Slightly biased here because I met him at a photography exhibition in Los Angeles and we have a mutual friend, but here's what I would say. First, I feel for the guy because that ailment or disease of the ear is a very serious condition. Second, he's come a long way from that tripe he was spitting out years ago. Third, he cannot be something that he is not. Just like John Cougar Mellencamp cannot be something that he is not. Ryan is a talented guy (by the way so is George Michael - the guy plays every instrument on every album, writes all the lyrics, sings, composes, produces) but he, like Ryan, trends toward the mainstream. That's just Ryan. It's not my cup of tea but I would not deny his talents. And he really does love The Smiths and he respects Morrissey.

It's interesting hearing you talk of Mellencamp because Adams's new album seemed to me to have more in common with him that the Smiths. It's certainly a very mainstream work. Like a certain other recent album it isn't one I'm likely to be racing back to often, but I enjoyed it for what it was.

Uh...that was Bryan Adams who sang Have you ever really loved a woman...not Ryan Adams.

I may have listened to a total of 90 minutes of Ryan Adams in my life but I always felt he was like Mellencamp. Just
got that vibe. For me music is often just an aural sense of things. My senses grab it, make a connection, reference it, and maybe even file it...if it's not something I'm going to explore further.

Ryan Adams is one of those artists that whenever I hear anything he’s done I enjoy it but I’m not too well versed on his stuff.

He did two Bob Mould songs at the tribute concert for Bob and it was the highlight of the night from the video I saw.

Thing I learned from this thread: Ryan Adams and Bryan Adams are not the same person.

awesome how many people thought Bryan Adams and Ryan Adams were the same person :lbf:
granted, all I know about Ryan is that someone sent me a song of his once:

other than being too long :o its not bad :thumb:
