Merchandise’s Carson Cox on Morrissey comparison - "I f--king hate Morrissey..."

Merchandise Talks 'After the End,' Punk Culture & Hating Morrissey Comparisons - Billboard

Excerpt:

But don’t mention Morrissey. Cox’s vocals are often likened to the old crooner, but for the record, he’s not a fan.

“I f--king hate Morrissey. I think everyone’s stupid for idolizing him. Obviously I love the Smiths, but I feel like he stopped writing good lyrics once he started his solo music.”

But former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr? That’s a little better.

“I don’t know Johnny Marr personally, but I know he’s said some nice things about us in the NME, so I would say he’s much cooler.”

I quite liked the track I just listened to. However I urge him to practice his withering put-downs. Maybe something along the lines of "Morrissey is a sub-species" would be better. Just saying "I f***ing hate someone" is so last year.

what an absolute bell-end.
Say some nice things and that makes you cool. Pathetic, like a small child.

Ahh, that's disappointing. Merchandise are a really exciting band too ('Children of Desire' EP being the highlight thus far. New album on 4AD sounds great also). His vocals resemble Morrissey in some ways, so would of expected a little more respect. Shame.

He's pretending to 'f***ing hate' Morrissey because he thinks that 'everybody' likes Morrissey. That's how hipsters function, for some reason. It's mildly funny.

This just in: Singer says negative things about another singer and gets publicity! Dickheads on slighted singer's fan forum react in tediously predictable fashion!

Never heard of them.
I like the way he basically says "someone said something nice about us so that person's cool".
Yeah, bye Felicia.

I literally don't know who this band are.

There's not actually that much wrong with this statement though:

“I f--king hate Morrissey. I think everyone’s stupid for idolizing him. Obviously I love the Smiths, but I feel like he stopped writing good lyrics once he started his solo music."

Apart from Viva Hate, I agree - he's never had a sustained patch of quality lyric writing on par with The Smiths, that's true.

Then why are you here?

Well let's see some lyrics of this band:

Merchandise keeps us in line
Common sense says it's by design
What could a businessman ever want more
Than to have us sucking in his store

And...

Wait, this band has no other known song

“I f--king hate Morrissey. I think everyone’s stupid for idolizing him. Obviously I love the Smiths, but I feel like he stopped writing good lyrics once he started his solo music.”

Can't say I've heard of them either. As misguided as it is though, I daresay the above quote is what most people (in the UK at least) think of Morrissey.

I must say that I like this band, but I like it only because they sound like the Smiths and at one point the singer looked like typical Morrissey fan, so where is the respect? Stupid thing to say, maybe he is tired that people see too much similarity with the
Smiths.

Merchandise:Worthless Apology Lyrics

I'm a velvet glove to a part of myself that I should really forget.
I wrote a poem.
All before my love
But the way the sun
Is bleaching us in this photograph
Burns the paper that it's printed on

That picture doesn't exist
No no no more kind words
They all seem to miss
Like the record without any help will pick the needle up
And using the phone isn't good enough
It's hard to know anyone
Everyday repeat this song

Oh, the safety lies in your safety net
Can't you see there made of me
Like a stranger caught in the way
Oh, you opened up
Because she's the one you want
But you never try hard enough
Apologize

I was looking up his quoted influences with intent to ridicule.

And then there’s Joedci..

But damn, these smooth jam beats are fresh!

I think it is clear, based on the lyrical quality of some of the mentioned artistic influences, that his beef with Morrissey isn't based on lyrics. I'm sure he's annoyed as f*** to be regarded as a Morrissey-esque voice. That and Morrissey is old. It's hip to rail against the old guard. Not unlike Moz slagging off Jagger. He may be more like Morrissey than he thinks. But not as talented.
