Richard Attenborough dies - true-to-you.net
26 August 2014

"I was thrilled beyond words to have met Richard Attenborough, who, of course, played Pinkie in Brighton Rock (1947), a central theme of my song Now my heart is full. When I met Sir Richard he was delightful, and I asked him if Brighton Rock seemed like a hundred years ago. He replied 'Oh, much more than that ...'.
I also had the extraordinary pleasure of meeting the recently deceased Lauren Bacall ... so beautiful, so cautious ... and so sad that her death was overshadowed by that of Robin Williams. It was Lauren, not Robin, who changed motion picture history. Yet modern media has an odd way of forgetting the more senior servers of the arts. Dora Bryan, whom I knew personally in the late 80s, and who also died in recent weeks, had pitifully slim attention from the British news media, yet her talents were a treasured staple of British life throughout the 1950s, 1960s and beyond. Dora had agreed to introduce the Smiths onstage at the London Palladium in 1986, but at the last minute her agent asked for a fee which we, the Smiths, just couldn't afford.
However, in our X-factory society, it seems that anyone who has NOT appeared on Big Brother just isn't worth remembering by the British media ... alas."

Rude.

No it isn't. Robins death was sad but he wasn't as important as lauran in terms of movie history.
Robin only has three films of any artistic merit. He mostly made family films. Moz isn't attacking robin he's attacking the media attebtion span.
Mozza writing is very very much like an fb friend of mine spooky

sad to see both go. i have reservations about deaths being overshadowed sometimes. darby crash committed suicide the same day john lennon was shot and i mostly remember darbys death.

Whilst I agree with Morrissey in the fact that many a talent get overlooked by more "modern" or "mainstream" entertainers, actors etc..I do think he could choose use his words a bit more thoughtfully. To a lot of people, Robin Williams meant more to their lives than Lauren Bacall.

Of course you are right.

If you read Autobiography you know Morrissey is kinda stuck in the forties thru sixties Hollywood......let me put it this way, he has more love and respect for artists of the past than those of the present.

I don't believe it was a criticism of Williams.

The shade thrown at Robin Williams seems pointless and strangely vindictive. I noticed the lack of media fanfare following Bacall's death and found it odd, and a bit of a shame considering her contributions to a classic era of cinema. But it's not as though Williams had prior knowledge of Bacall's impending death and timed his suicide so that the media would choose to focus more on his story than Bacall's. That said, I agree with Morrissey's point that the pioneers and trailblazers of the world are often sadly overlooked and undervalued.

This would almost make sense, if film were the only measure of importance, which it isn't.

I honestly think he sits in bed in his bathrobe with a large drink ( not his first of the evening) and types angrily at whatever he's thinking at the moment. Always slightly bitchy. Then sends it off to Julia.

It's obvious that Moz doesn't like Robin, because in the past few years Moz actually started to look like Robin, which probably didn't help his self-esteem...

...no offense to the departed.

In the Swords cover he looks cross eyed, and like he's taking a painful shit.

I didn't feel he was slagging or disrespecting of Robin Williams. His line "Yet modern media has an odd way of forgetting the more senior servers of the arts," is worth discussing. In his opinion the coverage of RW versus Lauren Bacall was disproportionate to their influence on cinema - arguable, but a valid argument. I think the depression and suicide of the former obviously sent it into the "trending" stratosphere.

Ugh! Morrissey, when will you die so we all will forget your senior server self? You've served your purpose & are now just over ripped & rotting.

Many didn't know him most from films, but from his contribution to comedy. I, for one, was more influenced by the comedy albums I spun over and over during my childhood than I was by any films of my childhood (including the likes of Star Wars, etc.), in the same way I was in a later stage in my life heavily influenced by spinning Smiths vinyl. You can't assume the media coverage was only due to his film career plus the depression/suicide factor - that would be a great injustice.

What is disgusting is that while Lauren got a corner of the cover of people, a Duggar spawn got the cover announcing she is knocked up 6 weeks after her wedding.

it did seem a little rude as he could have just said it was overshadowed as i imagine theres enough pain in robins families daily life without his pointless contribution. rollins response was really out of line but in his defense his apology did actually read like an apology. he said he just didnt understand or get it and was angry about the act and asked people to help him understand. as to robins sure he made family films but any movie that i dont think stupid that i could watch with my kid and see them laugh with enough poignant moments to actually keep me amused is awesome in my book which is what i think of movies like hook, popeye and aladin. i loved hook as a child and still smile when i think of it and the band it inspired (fred knows). i just love outright films like death to smootchy, what dreams may come, good will hunting, the fisher king, good morning vietnam, dead poets society, the birdcage and seize the day. also didnt mind movies such as jack, being human, toys, hamlet, happy feet, jumanji, and i sorta liked cadillac man. thats a pretty solid catalog of good films with merit. stuff like patch adams didnt make my day though i do think them, sappy stories based on real people, interesting.
