Morrissey responds to Billboard report, insists the Harvest relationship is over - true-to-you.net

No agreement was ever signed? Didn't he announce on tty early this year that he had a 2 album deal?

What f***ery.

It's a licencing deal rather than a recording deal. If you look at the label of WPINOYB, the copyright on the recording is Moz's (as it was with YOR).

Morrissey's case seems to be that that Harvest are not interested in releasing the second album, which makes him a free agent.

If I ran my professional relationships and life like this, I would fail. We have to remember, morrissey is extremely lucky. He was destined for poverty and squalor, he seized his opportunity, it worked and now he can do whatever the f*** he wants to do or say. I think we all secretly wish we had that power in some situations to make stupid decisions.

Indeed. Was he telling the truth with this new statement, or this older statement...

Unless of course, there's some cute semantics and wordplay going on - he signed a 2-album deal with Capitol, not, as he puts it in this new statement, Capitol-Harvest.

From the Billboard article:
"A source close to the situation tells Billboard that Moz has not been dropped by Harvest/Capitol, and that his contract with the company calls for two releases, the first of which was World Peace."

So Harvest/Capitol STILL have not made any comment on the matter, correct? I think it's time for them to do so!

So it could be he's angling for a transfer to a different division of the company.

This sort of drama can only happen to Morrissey!

Looking forward to more statements :D

Or someone made the point above about the deal being a licensing deal and nothing else. When Moz announced in January he had a two album deal, he didn't say what type of deal.

Yawn. So sick of reading about this record company business. If he parts ways with Harvest, Capitol-Harvest, whoever they are, he'll stumble into some other company. He always does. Sometimes it takes a long time, but he always finds someone who wants him.

He keeps the cash. This record is doing well in the global market. Smart move.

I do have to laugh at how readily every media source that picked up on the Billboard story (the one that claimed he hadn't been dropped) referred to it as though it were fact, even though Billboard quite clearly stated their information was from "a source close to the situation," and not based on an actual statement from anyone at Harvest/Capitol.

Also, can someone who knows about this sort of thing shed light on what's meant by "Morrissey retains full ownership of World Peace is None Of Your Business" (in today's TTY statement)? Does that mean Morrissey could theoretically re-release WPINOYB with another label if he wanted to?

No, he has an agreement with Harvest which grants them exclusive rights for a set period.

All of this shit is just so f***ing boring, isn't it?
Make an album, Moz, release the f***ing album and then get on with the c***ing next one; instead of perpetuating all of this tedious f***ing flim-flam.

Updates to Morrissey's Facebook page have been deleted back to June 10 and the Letters To Morrissey Tumblr is gone!

Re: morrissey harvest records

Poor Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists) is having a meltdown on facebook over the fact one day Morrissey is a fellow label mate, and the next day he isn't, then he is again, then he isn't again. He just wants to meet Morrissey at the staff Christmas party :(

Billboard report Morrissey Wasn't Dropped By His Record Label

In response to Andrew Flanagan's incorrect report for Billboard online (15 August 2014), both Morrissey and Morrissey's lawyer are in possession of email correspondence from Steve Barnett (head of Capitol-Harvest Records), and also from Steve Barnett's personal assistant, both of whom confirm that Capitol-Harvest have ended their relationship with Morrissey. No recording Agreement with Capitol-Harvest was ever signed by Morrissey, and Morrissey retains full ownership of World Peace is None Of Your Business. Contrary to the assured Billboard report, Capitol-Harvest have very clearly stated that they would have no interest in licensing a second album by Morrissey. Russells (London), who represent Morrissey, are presently concluding Morrissey's relationship with Harvest Records.
Once again, Morrissey is in search of a new label.

What this means is that Morrissey signed a licensing deal with Capitol-Harvest, giving them the right to release and use the recordings for WPINOYB for a set period of time. The only way that this is possible is for Morrissey himself to finance the recording of the album and all the players involved (including Joe C.). This also happened with Years of Refusal, and if you notice, you can still find copies of YOR in stores, but not YATQ or ROTT, which are owned by Sanctuary (which I believe is now owned by Universal). So yes, after a certain period of time he can re-release WPINOYB through another label.

In the music industry, the only real way to make money is through touring and licensing. Now that Morrissey owns the recording, if anyone wants to license any of the songs on WPINOYB (or YOR) for a commercial or whatnot, he gets all of the cash and Capitol-Harvest will probably get a 10% commission style payment.
