Johnny Marr on his forthcoming autobiography - "...won't be any kind of response to anything"

I can't wait for Johnny's new album (October 7th). I loved a lot of the songs on "The Messenger." There was speculation that the "The Trap" was going to be a B-side from "The Messenger," but that never materialized. I laughed when I saw that "Easy Money" is gonna be the lead single off of "Playland." That's the nickname of one of my co-workers, a great man & classic character.

I was a little disappointed to learn that he's going to wait 18 months to start writing his autobiography, but understand his reason for doing so. I'm hoping he'll do a better job illustrating The Smiths heydays better than Morrissey did. I thought Morrissey did an awesome job writing about his youth and also the last rambling third of the book, which most folks didn't seem to love. I also loved his ghost story on the Moors. I just wish he would've brought the wonderment of the Smiths to full life, which he only partially succeeded at. Hopefully Johnny will do a lot better at doing this. I'm also interested in reading about his Modest Mouse days and living in Portland. Portland is an underrated, exciting, and Fun city. The city's battlecry is "Keep Portland Weird," which says it all. I hope he writes a little about Portland and its vibrant music scene.

Usually Rolling Stone magazine doesn't knock my socks off, but this was a well-written and informative piece from Kory Grow. Assuredly, the magazine only gave him a limited amount of space to pen the piece, and he certainly made the most of it.

That was a good read, thanks for sharing.

I’ve been listening to The Messenger at least once a day since finally biting the bullet and downloading it off iTunes last week. I kept hearing how great it was and slept on it for some reason. I wish I didn’t, but I guess it’s never too late.

(Disclaimer: I hate to be that guy) My friend received a watermarked copy of the new album to review and said that it’s even better than The Messenger. I can’t wait til October.

"I always liked bands' second album," Johnny Marr says. "I like the Talking Heads' second album a lot.

One of my favorite albums.

Messenger was quite good. Really looking forward to this.

How is it Marr can release 2 albums in 2 years and touring the world but Moz can only release 2 over 5 years? wink, wink, nod, nod

Johnny Marr Skewers Greed and Dreams Big on Second Solo Album - Rolling Stone

Former Smiths guitarist discusses his forthcoming memoir and new album: "We tried to make good, catchy guitar pop."

Excerpt:

Currently, Marr reports that solo records are his primary objective, but he has not forgotten the project he teased two years before The Messenger: an autobiography. Although his former Smiths bandmate, Morrissey, was the first member of that group to publish a memoir, the guitarist says his book will be "my life story, it won't be any kind of response to anything."

Marr began collecting stories and information for his book about 18 months ago. He estimates he'll finally begin writing it in another 18 months' time, so that nothing obstructs his recording and touring process, "no matter how much money I get offered."

Got to admit that Johnny looks in amazing shape in that photo. Sure, we all know he dyes his hair, but that photo looks like it could have been taken 5 years after 'Strangeways' - not 27 years. The running/vegan diet/no booze lifestyle is obviously working well for him.

"In his formative years, the now 50-year-old guitarist was fixated on the recording process, an obsession that led him to record with groups ranging from Modest Mouse to The The to the dance supergroup Electronic, among others. "

Is this the first Johnny article to NOT mention The Smiths?

He's in a good space. Mentally and physically. He's seems very content with himself. Very much the opposite of a current Morrissey.

I can't read an interview about an album I haven't heard yet. I could do it with an unheard Morrissey album. Looking forward to hearing it though. I love The Messenger. I just hope his music videos improve or at least the choreography does.

Just back from seeing Johnny and his band at the G-mex

They smashed out Panic, I Fought the Law (Clash), Getting Away With It (Electronic), How Soon is Now and There Is A Light

It was an enthralling experience and one full of majesty and confidence from marr the front man and his superb band

Are you not entertained 10/10 delivery and execution

Lucky you Mozzersmandan ! He always seems to deliver a great live show and the mixing in of a Smith song or two is such a treat. I'm going to preoder Playland on Amazon today if it will let me .

I like the music on his new single, but when you take it as a whole (with the lyrics and the way he sings them) and compare it to anything off 'World Peace...' you realise how great Morrissey's album is and how great his songwriting still is.
However, if you compare the music of the two; even though Marr's is kind of conventional, and almost blandly so, there is a simple drama and atmosphere that he creates. Again, though, I think the music on Morrissey's latest album is just superior; more melodic, catchier, more eclectic and ambitious.
Overall, I think Morrissey's current output is leagues ahead.

Marr really needs a great songwriter to work with and some musical ambition again.

Johnny you don't need to look into the camera in every single shot and wear he same outfit on every single video.

btw why is his thread not in Other music?
