"World Peace..." #12 in second week UK album charts

Funny! There is no surprises here--actually he is lucky it is still in top twenty. We all must remember that this is one of his worst releases in his solo career.

This is not a massive drop. Morrissey's albums have often sunk after the first week, because the die-hards (us) buy it, or 4 copies of it, on the first day it is released. The exception to the rule was Quarry where its four top 10 singles kept the album in the top 10, 40, 100, for a long time, because when the album was about to sink out of sight a single would buoy it back up in the charts. It is actually a testament to this album, that with no singles, and pretty much no promotion/press, that it did not drop further. As Fred said, a lot of non-die-hards did not even know he had put out a new album. I would venture that these second week sales suggest that in the U.K. - not the U.S.A. - that the overwhelmingly positive reviews and good word of mouth has spread such that the less hardcore fans and the cross-over fans know there is a new album and are buying it.

yeah i was gonna say that about it not being a massive drop but its to tiring to try and convince people sometimes. i dont pay attention to charts very often, mostly just in a curious academic sense, but i did when suede released there last one which went number ten and then forty i think and it seemed to keep them going for quite a bit. dont know about individual sales units but it seemed to get them some nice dates and make them good money from touring spots they got from it so it didnt seem that bad a spot

You want to see a drop ,wait till next week in the U.S
unless his Latino following buy some copies-* sarcasm
Next week- 40's something range.then gone ....Forever

Agreed. Plus maybe next week it will go up a bit again when the Hot Topic pressing comes out. Though that’s only 1000.

I fully understand the need for some to put a brave face on these disappointing results but worldwide sales of 58,000, some of which may well have been hardcore fans "buying four copies" isn't exactly great. Years of Refusal sold 58,000 in the first two months, not worldwide, but in the USA alone.

World Peace has/had two main problems to overcome. Firstly, the songs simply aren't there, and secondly, and I think most importantly, Morrissey himself is now a toxic brand. He has been running his mouth for too long, and even people who have supported him are sick of it. You can behave like a diva when you are one, but when you struggle to sell out a small town tour of the US you simply cannot.

As I said a couple of weeks ago the complete lack of interest in its promotion from Morrissey himself makes me wonder if even he was fully convinced by it. He caught a cold from KY [sic] yet a month later was still too ill? That doesn't stack up, unless he was lying.

He is a depressive, negative character who copes with those traits through his popularity. Now that is waning how will he deal with that? He's too narcissistic to kill himself, so brace yourselves for more ludicrous comments from the bunker.

It's all pointing to a Smiths reunion, sooner or later. The money and spotlight will be too much to pass up.

Hi Johnny,
I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
Whilst your post is clearly thought out and makes sense I can't help but see it differently.
Yes, there has been all the nonsense about the tour cancellations, the dumb public pronouncements and so on.
I really got sick of it all, and with the lack of output, all this nonsense began to define him.
I got really sick of the twat.
But then we got Autobiography and the new album.
No disrespect to those who don't like the new stuff, but I think these 2 new products are wonderful and it demonstrates what an amazing artist he is.
Despite everything, when he does what he can really do (and that does not include political philosophy) he produces incredibly high quality, entertaining and often beautiful art.
I'm not a cultist (as I hope many Solo-ers know) I am just in awe of his abilities as a musician and writer.

Nobody's calling you a twat for liking the album so quit with the aggressive behaviour.

Every single one of your posts is an insult. It's all you've done since you joined. Actually it seems to be the sole reason why you joined.

You're wrong about Quarry. The only thing that stopped it plummeting was the huge (for Morrissey) radio airplay which FOTG received. That did (for the first time since Viva Hate) prevent a Moz album from sinking into oblivion after its release, and gave it about an extra 10 weeks on the chart. When LMKY and I forgive Jesus were released, album sales were not affected at all because hardly any stations played those songs.
If an edited version of Staircase is released, it will revive the current album's fortunes, as it will get a lot more airplay than Istanbul (Radio 2 A list etc). It's the most euphoric song he's sung since FOTG.
