“Staircase At The University” made Entertainment Weekly’s top 10 this week

It's one of the great ironies of the album and a particularly Morrissey thing methinks that some of the most joyous vocal parts are when he sings particularly sad or scary lines. Like the chorus of Scandinavia, for instance, or the way he sings "And her head split three waaaaaaaays!".
It makes my heart sing until I realise what he's singing...

I love it and think it’s one of the more “classic” sounding tracks on the album. It’s just perfect.

you could say the same about instanbul to a degree though it counters itself in the same song with the crunchy part.

nice to see anyway, the exposure. still my least fav song on album. if he does release another single it should be kiss me a lot imo.

Whoopie Doo, the albums shit how many times do I have to tell you's, 3 of the singles never made the uk top 100, TTY posts istanbul is top of the German college charts ffs, doesn't that say it all. It's shite shite double shite

Staircase is one of my favorite Moz songs of all time. Should have been the first single. It will make a great karaoke song. It is almost an anthem. Sing it. The horns make you feel you are in a marching band. Yes sing it loud and march around the house and be sure to whistle at the 1:02 mark.

And for all you haters, go blow it out your arse!

Ah, cool! Thanks for sharing. I love seeing things like this in mainstream US mags. And Staircase is perfect, of course, all the way through.

I love seeing that stuff too! We were in line at Wegman’s the other day and I remembered that the album was mentioned in a People magazine so I excitedly pulled it open and showed the Mrs.

Why is there a whistle at the start? Why does Moz sing 'Universi-tay'? The song is a bit of a Satan Rejected My Soul - a romp.

I think the sound of a whistle represents a competition.

I love the song, but you think it's a romp which is fair enough.

'A romp' translates as good, upbeat, an enjoyable song. It provides a lift to the album at that point. I like it. :)

yeah i was thinking the same. sports are supposed to be fun competitions but rarely end up that way at university. education is supposed to be for personal benefit but it rarely is judged that way. its usually seen as a means to another end, success and status.

The whistle immediately reminded me about school marching bands (the track has a marching band sound to it, too) the first time I heard it. It sets the tone. Later, I thought, maybe it symbolizes how she was inwardly screaming about how stressed she felt over the pressure of the grades and expectations of all those around her, but no one really heard her...which is why she made the leap. She's the whistle, splitting through the air. No one notices. No one hears.

Then again, I overanalyze and I reach...I reach...I reach. Damn my major to hell!

A whistle represents a foul or stop playing.

The whistle is equating education with a competitive event.

Morrissey must hate people with brains.

No it isn't. In many schools (and certainly in mine), the whistle signalled the end of a break or the beginning of the academic day. In other words, playtime is over; you're ours now.

Morrissey must hate people who somehow manage to completely miss a blatantly obvious point.
