Behind the Scenes of the Recording of WPINOYB

Thanks for the translation of the highlights...

Morrissey disappearing for a couple days sounds about right. I'd wager this happens with every record he's ever recorded. Same with the veggie diet and demo submissions. But daily haircuts and champagne? The struggle is real.

The most interesting bit here is that Your Arsenal was used as a reference point in the studio. Very telling.

I've heard about his live of champagne, but honestly how fast does this man's hair grow? I know the quiff is pretty high maintenance, thank goodness for Damon, I guess.

Daily haircuts? f*** you, Morrissey.

His "PA" is a barber. Pretty easy to have daily haircuts then, isn't it?

You devote a large amount of your time describing your hate for a man you've never even met. Sad, really.

the daily haircuts sound spot on as you never know when your pic will be snapped and i myself am very fussy about my hair which i get made fun of for a lot. wind is my enemy.

Behind the scene of the recording of World Peace Is None Of Your Business in July 16 issue of Les Inrockuptibles. - intlplayboy / Tumblr

Les Inrockuptibles in their July 16 issue put together a gossipy & entertaining “behind the scenes” of Morrissey & the band at La Fabrique in Saint Rémy de Provence during the recording of World Peace Is None Of Your Business.

Here are some the highlights of the article (take my translation & interpretation with a grain of salt).
  • Veggie diet for all, except for Paula the Chocolate lab. No surprise there.
  • Band submitted demos prior to recording but had no idea when arriving at La Fabrique of the vocals laid over the music.
  • Several copies of Your Arsenal were scattered throughout the rooms of La Fabrique.
  • Daily haircuts for Morrissey & the band.
  • Black curtain around Morrissey while he was singing during the recording.
  • Unexplained disappearances of Morrissey during the recording: once he went behind the black curtain & when the sound engineer went to check he wasn’t there & reappeared after 2 days.
  • Beverages of choice: champagne for Morrissey & beer for the band.
  • Mistreatments of harps with forks, knives & pieces of wood.
  • Attempt to duet with Charles Aznavour but declined by the Mr Charles. This one breaks my heart, it would have been a dream come true.

In the midst of all the anecdotes, they are very positive about the album.

Daily haircuts? Not surprised at the champagne or the fact that he disappeared for two days. I do recall seeing photos of the studio with YA on vinyl on the floor.

Disc is really growing on me. There is truly no one else on Earth like him in the public eye. His extreme nature makes for compelling art, and there is a place for that in the world b/c most art is fluffy obfuscation.

Having done a great deal of studio recording, I can relate to the use of the black curtain. Vocal performance can be a very very intimate thing (even more so than being on stage, I think) and some of us look pretty damn goofy when we're emoting deeply. One should have the freedom to be fully expressive without several studio engineers watching like emotion hawks, even if unintentional.

daily hair cuts? bizzare, but fair enough.. sure it wasn't just styling or general hair care?

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. They'd either be cutting off tiny amounts of hair everyday or they'll all be bald within a week. Then again, does anything make sense with Moz?

This is Les Inrockuptibles we're talking about here. It's not uncommon to see anecdotes like this that are not fully grounded in reality. This is how myths start—someone makes a joke about everyone getting daily haircuts, and the next thing you know, it's printed in a magazine…

Hear hear! I actually found myself wondering how awkward it would be to sing like he does in front of a room full of people. At concerts, they're egging you on, crying for more, but in the recording booth there's just expectation.

World Peace really is a lovely album. I held off listening to it until its official release and the delayed gratification is real. From song to song, it's a strong album that is true to Moz but he's obviously still experimenting and developing. Bésame mucho!

it really is though ,the wind and all. i have a sorta brett anderson cut from his 1993 days, hair on top about down to my chin angle cut up and bcak with the sides buzzed on a two guard, and i walk with my face tilted just so it wont blow it out of shape. wind is my enemy could be a good concept for a morrissey follow up though it may break him in the studio. as long as he doesnt break it though i guess.

and yeah im guessing haircare/styling is included in the term haircut in this instance

Any word yet on the second album of this deal with Harvest? I could really use another Greatest Hits album.
