Information regarding Morrissey's Autobiography

11 April 2014

Morrissey has rejected the many and varied requests to have his Autobiography translated into several languages. As per his wishes, the book will remain a UK Penguin Classic, and will not be printed in the countries listed on this site some months ago.

Very Nigel Farage of Morrissey :D

Rejected?? WHY?!?!?

This is really REALLY bloody disappointing! Was looking forward to getting copies for friends and family.

Why was the announcement in December even put up? It shouldn't have been mentioned up in the FIRST place...

Makes me wonder if others contact Julia on his behalf (for eg: Donnie Knutson, Damon, etc)..Or if he drunk calls/faxes/emails/whatever julia..

And...If he is so "money hungry" as some say, he'd have it translated into every language possible...

So bloody disappointed Moz. :( ..Let's hope he doesn't change his mind about anything else anytime soon....

Autobiography is none of the world's business.

Re: No translations of autobiography. Not impressed at all!

Things get lost in translation. He probably feels his book is ambiguous enough already.

realitybites is spot on. As they are not languages Morrissey grasps then interpretation is left to the translator to retell it.

I can comment only Japanese translators, we have many brilliant ones who have excellent knowledge of British culture.

Possibly Morrissey might be fed up with questions and eagerness of some translators which could be the reason for changing his mind. :(

Facts can be translated accurately. Nuances and cheeky phrases cannot. Autobiography is not a travelogue. It is a work of art. A masterpiece. A Penguin Classic. Perfection cannot be tampered with. Haha.

Do you really think you 100% understand what he means?

Although it seems impossible to translate his autobiography into other languages, fans whose mother tongues aren't English also deserved to have a translated version.

Good point. Imagine having to field the questions of nuance from fourteen different translators who'd be emailing him constantly for three months. :squiffy:

"When you writes 'streets upon streets upon streets' by what does you means? It like lots of...you does you says...aufgangen?" X 14. Eff that ess.

Deserve? No they don't. They can learn English--his native tongue. He owes them nothing. Next you are going to want his songs translated and sung in twenty different languages.

Like brilliant lyrics and poetry and literature, Autobiography would lose much of its charm and greatness if translated. It wouldn't be the same book. Period.

Wow, this is totally uncalling for.

Morrissey could have ignored some requests / questions, just replied them through his agent that he did not have time to answer their questions.
He didn't have to cancel the deal.

I agree Kewpie -- it would have been wonderful for fans everywhere to be able to have Autobiography readily available in their native tongue.

Sorry if my opinion offended you. Should I have sprinkled it with sugar before serving it to you?

So you are disappointed. Cancel is his middle name. You should know that by now. I get that you want a copy in Japanese for your collection. I would too if I were you. But it would not be the same book and you know it.
