Cliff Richard interview about Morrissey support slot - BBC News

Being broadcast on Radio 5 Live in a bit. Up All Night.

Cliff is being interviewed from his humasexual house in Barbados. Where boys run freely on the beach while he sips a Pina Colada and reminisces about Una Stubbs.

It's all very Rik from the Young Ones

About a month ago my manager rang me and said: "I'm going to throw a curveball at you. Morrissey wants you in New York with him."

:D

Well that was odd. Pat, Patrick, Mr Morrissey.
Lucky lift indeed,

That was quite weird! Cliff Richard seems, to me, to be an unlikely choice.
I'm also shocked to read that Morrissey is a fan of Cliff!

It does seem odd, but I'm guessing the being a fan of Cliff comes from:
1. The rock'n'roll UK's answer to Elvis Cliff - not 'born again' Cliff.
2. Much like Sandie Shaw/Cilla Black: Eurovision Song Contest Cliff - a contest Moz has stated a love for.
I don't think the audience is going to cope with 'wired for sound' - unless it's a cryptic Johnnie Ray reference.
Regards,
FWD

Sir Cliff Richard 'honoured' to support Morrissey - BBC News
Sir Cliff Richard has said it was a "great honour" to be asked by former Smiths frontman Morrissey to support him at a concert in New York.

Excerpt:

Q. How did this come about?

A. About a month ago my manager rang me and said: "I'm going to throw a curveball at you. Morrissey wants you in New York with him."

I said "My initial answer is yes but can you check it's not a joke? Is there an ulterior motive?" He got hold of Morrissey's management and he said: "No, Morrissey's a fan and he'd like you to be there."

So I said: "Yes please." The chances of me singing for 15,000 people in New York are pretty well nil for me at the moment anyway. So I thought it would be great.

I checked on the internet and saw a couple of shots of him live, and his audiences look really - I don't know how to say this - they look really nice. They were swaying in the crowd and mouthing lyrics and I was thinking: "Oh, my audiences do that." So maybe his audience will be kind to me.

Q. How aware of his music have you been over the years?

A. I knew of him, even when he was lead singer of The J… The Smiths. I can't say that I've followed his musical career but I've followed the success. I've Googled him a couple of times now and I'm thinking, I could be a fan.

...
Q. He also has very strict vegetarian rules surrounding the gigs - will you be going vegetarian for the day?

A. Certainly not. No, of course not. I like to think he might eat some meat when I arrive, but I wouldn't expect him to. So I don't think he'd expect me to be vegetarian. If I found he was offended by people eating meat then I won't eat it in front of him. But I'll have a chicken curry afterwards.

looks like he almost said that Moz was the lead singer of The Jam :lbf:
still, I think its cool pick having him open :) & Tom Jones in L.A. I'd love to see that! :guitar:

This whole affair is very weird.

I liked it much better when Patti Smith was his special guest.

"I like to think he might eat some meat when I arrive" - I nearly lost my tea.

That chicken curry comment is going to get him kicked off that gig!

I suspect it will get him kicked off. I can't see Morrissey sanctioning that comment.

Cliff Richard has blown a once in a lifetime opportunity with his callous insistence on consuming dead animals. I'm not even familiar with the work of Cliff Richard, but oh well.

I don't know much about Cliff Richard either and my hope springs eternal that Moz will do the right thing this time :thumb:
and not kick him off just because he also consumes animals & admits to it
just like the vast majority of humans on planet Earth
but then again, I have had my hopes dashed before :o
so its possible that a small, but very vocal, percentage of those that don't eat animals will get their wish
another victory for those people who hate other people masquerading as a defense of animals
good for them if it happens, I guess

ps: Tom Jones may eat animals as well

When was Cilla Black ever in the Eurovision Song Contest? I think you probably mean Lulu. As for not being fond of the 'born again' Cliff, look at the recent picture of Morrissey with Tom Jones and Mel Gibson to see Morrissey wearing a cross chain, also the recent TTY post about Prince William mentions praying to God (and God spelled with a capital 'G'). I doubt that Morrissey has suddenly become devoutly religious (he would have an inability to accept anything in the Universe as being higher or more important than he himself is), but he's certainly less of a "lapsed Catholic" than he once was. Morrissey is becoming increasingly conservative in his old age (despite claiming at one point that he would not vote Conservative because he never has - but then again everybody lies). Think David Starkey, Peter Hitchens, Nigel Farage, Melanie Phillips, Mel Gibson - that's the 2014 Morrissey. He's in that group, a radical left-wing activist he is not. He won't invite Pussy Riot to perform with him (that is, if they were available), he'll invite Cliff Richard. Morrissey once stated that, and I paraphrase; "the most important trend for the future should be to preserve as much from the past as humanly possible", so don't be surprised, he has been going down this road for quite some time. The most important thing for Morrissey is to always be seen as a contrarian, to be doing the opposite of what is popular and mainstream; "to disagree with 3/4ths of the British public on all points is one of the first elements of sanity". So while Thatcher was in government he was reading the New Statesman, now in the face of multiculturalist thinking, racial/gender identity politics and rabid 'anti-fascist' groups, he's expressing an admiration for Farage and getting back in touch with his Catholic roots. That is the way of the man, always taking the opposite stance of the 'elite' and those who believe they know best. Long may he continue to do so.
Kind regards.

Awww. Bless him. It's nice to know such a one-time close friend of Lord Boothby can still be so innocent.

I reckon his mum has had a hand in all this.

P.

Only Morrissey can pull off Cliff Richard.

There's a lot to this, but being a contrarian in changing times essentially means you believe in not much at all, and Morrissey seems to be astonishingly naive where politics are concerned. While most people can see positives on both sides of the political divide around a centre point, hence Labour/Tory, Democrat/Republican taking turns in power, Morrissey takes the extremes of the far right and the far left.

He's the world's only UKIP supporter who calls for the dismantling of the British state, for example. He doesn't say such things because he is clever, he says such things because he's a fool.

The whole interview is just ingenious. I'd consider saving it as an audio-book or a ringtone for when ever I'm feeling down.

I hate to break it to Cliff, but I don't know how likely that will be! Morrissey fans can be quite impatient waiting for their idol, and considering that Cliff isn't well known in America, I'm not sure how "kind" they'll be to him! I know that Cliff was the manufactured pop pretty boy of his day, but I'm a massive fan of some of his earlier material, from when he was still going for the "rebel" image, so I also hope that the fans are "nice" to him! Would love to see him (and Tom Jones, for that matter) tour with Morrissey in the UK, but can't see either wanting to compromise on who would get the limelight.
