Kill Uncle re-appraisal at Louder Than War

There's another review in the new edition of Vive Le Rock magazine:

What if _Kill Uncle_ was the first Morrissey album you ever heard and you never heard of The Smiths? Wouldn't you think it was original and interesting? Wouldn't it reach into the soul of the nonconformist as Morrissey tends to do and no other does? People need to stop comparing albums. It's pathetic.

Comparing albums is pathetic? Lordy. Who knew.

If I'd never listened to the Smiths or Morrissey and Kill Uncle was the first thing I'd heard, I would switch it off before the first half had played through and donate it to a charity shop. It's neither original nor interesting; for the most part it's unrecognisable as Morrissey.

Although I do think there are elements that are original and interesting, this would not be a record that would win the uninitiated. I already LOVED Morrissey when I heard this and still it took me years to appreciate it. Musically it is largely under-welming and many of the lyrics are rather un-Morrisseyesque. I have affection for KU because I am a fan and appreciate it for what it is.

Re:

another breach of TOS ?

Answer is NO.

Who cares about a troll in Croatia who has nothing better than insult others.

That troll hasn't made a single positive contribution (ie post a scan of magazine etc) yet, you should ignore.

I was a huge Smiths fan, then Viva Hate I thought was great, by the time I got to Kill Uncle I was seriously done with Morrissey. It's literally taken me 20 years to give him a good listen again. So, I'm lucky as I'm enjoying a renaissance of sorts with Vauxhall, YATQ, Years of Refusal and Ringleader. I almost never gave them a listen. That's just me, but Kill Uncle and Bona Drag just didnt do it for me, to each his own. Maybe one day ill be able to go back to those earlier records and gain some appreciation for the but I dunno....

Sir Tobias was in Hvar last year. You should visit also.

It has some great moments, Sing Your Life and the two songs that close the album especially but overall you've got a point. It's his only album that never really got any better the more you played it.

I´ve heard Kill Uncle and Bona Drag when they were released and i don´t think they are bad. In some cases i think they show Morrissey at the peak of his own misery. They are very rich in terms of lyrics, and musically, Clive langer music and Mark Nevin music is very interesting. I even prefer the first edition of Kill Uncle, back in 1991, than this brand new edition. I think this new edition has made him lost his misery, a little...A good Morrissey album must have some sad and painful lyrics. Everyone who passes through a difficult situation in life will love both Bona Drag and Kill Uncle albuns. But it´s my opinion, and nothing more!!!

if you seen the gigs in 1991 you must adore the album, knowing that it sounded live way different than the album

It's the wet blanket record, love it or loathe it

great revieuw
