Margaret Thatcher dead: Morrissey blasts former PM as "barbaric" just hours after her death is announced - Mirror Online
8 Apr 2013 19:36
The musician has been a long-time critic of the former Prime Minister

Outspoken Morrissey tonight blasted Margaret Thatcher as "barbaric" and someone "without an atom of humanity".

The musician has been a long-time critic of the former Prime Minister and aired his views in songs like Margaret On The Guillotine.

Tonight, just hours after her death, he released a strongly-worded statement slamming the former Tory politician.

he said: "Thatcher is remembered as The Iron Lady only because she possessed completely negative traits such as persistent stubbornness and a determined refusal to listen to others.

"Every move she made was charged by negativity; she destroyed the British manufacturing industry, she hated the miners, she hated the arts, she hated the Irish Freedom Fighters and allowed them to die, she hated the English poor and did nothing at all to help them, she hated Greenpeace and environmental protectionists, she was the only European political leader who opposed a ban on the Ivory Trade, she had no wit and no warmth and even her own Cabinet booted her out."

Morrissey, whose first Smiths single Hand In Glove was released a month before Baroness Thatcher won her second term of office as Prime Minister in 1983, was highly critical of her role in the Falklands War.

He said: "She gave the order to blow up The Belgrano even though it was outside of the Malvinas Exclusion Zone - and was sailing AWAY from the islands.

"When the young Argentinean boys aboard The Belgrano had suffered a most appalling and unjust death, Thatcher gave the thumbs up sign for the British press. Iron? No. Barbaric? Yes.

"She hated feminists even though it was largely due to the progression of the women's movement that the British people allowed themselves to accept that a Prime Minister could actually be female. But because of Thatcher, there will never again be another woman in power in British politics, and rather than opening that particular door for other women, she closed it.

Outspoken Morrissey, who recently cancelled a series of shows due to ill health, went on: "Thatcher will only be fondly remembered by sentimentalists who did not suffer under her leadership, but the majority of British working people have forgotten her already, and the people of Argentina will be celebrating her death.

"As a matter of recorded fact, Thatcher was a terror without an atom of humanity," he added.

He's taking the piss now, surely? Well, we have learnt something today. There are no mirrors in Morrissey's house. Talk about a lack of self-awareness. Laughable.

Once more the muddled meanderings of Morrissey rear their ill informed head, but I can't be bothered to go through the errors line by line. I'll do the one in the first sentence though. Thatcher will be remembered as the Iron Lady as the name was given to her by the Soviets out of grudging respect.

As for the Belgrano, Morrissey really is turning into a latter day Lord Haw Haw - that other Paddy pretending to be English when it suited - but without the facts. Using the death of Thatcher and those poor sods on the Belgrano to shift some tickets? How low can this irrelevant twat stoop?

Write some songs, you tedious c***.

These days all he has are mashups of what's gone before.

I doubt any TTY statement will differ greatly. Buenos Aires beckons. Ker-ching!!

Shame if it's rehash, and it's not a statement, i hope he doesn't blow it with a 'notice me' nonsense statement, dragging in the Royals and the Beckhams. But...he's got form..

The Belgrano was outside the exclusion zone. Are you claiming that fact is disputed? Thatcher's death is coincidental with his planned visit. If he goes OTT with nonsense then take him down. Thatcher faced down Gorbachev with Reagan. Recognising that achivement does not excuse her for putting into motion The Big Bang whereby our City Of London was allowed to become an epicentre of corrupt financial weapons of mass destruction which now threaten the world economy's very existence as a functioning entity. Derivatives. She will be remembered as a credulous fool with a big chip on her shoulder.
If this is a mash-up of previous quotes, then that's good. Until Morrissey stops putting his foot in his mouth, he'd be well advised to return to his glory days when he was able to communicate concisely without endlessly referencing sperm war winners and glamorous football/fahsion designer couples with beautiful children.

Morrissey could have posed with champagne, he could have announced he was re-releasing MOTG, well, he's re-releasing everything in sight, so why not. Morrissey is not pretending to be a Paddy, you thick eejit. Fifth Province: all over the world.

What the f*** is this "just hours" after her death? :squiffy: This is total blasphemy, like he's sitting there like a troll waiting to slam her. Which he probably is but he WASN'T in this case. Is the Mirror reputable?

I still like what he said about her though. Still, headline massively misleading. Like sueably massively misleading if this were an American headline.

like he's sitting there like a troll

Well all I can say, is that we still don't know if he's had a good day or what.

Chip, it just proves what a bunch of c***s troll here - yet according to DavidT, that's "freedom of speech".

Newsflash, David: 99% of internet forums delete and block trolls without compromising free speech or promoting censorship! But no, you won't block or ban VIVA, nor delete VIVA's horrifically spiteful post bemoaning the fact that Morrissey's mother is still alive. That post was inexcusable and demonstrates the depths to which this detestable place has sunk. (And before anyone comes back and whines "Oh, but Morrissey has wished death on people" let's not forget that Morrissey's remarks are hyperbole arising from a longheld stance on a wider subject. VIVA's comment was just inexcusable childish cruelty. I guess VIVA must be a very sad and angry person if he/she feels empowered by posting such hateful bile online).

Re: Article: Margaret Thatcher dead: Morrissey blasts former PM as "barbaric" just ho

"persistent stubbornness and a determined refusal to listen to others" - Bravo. That's just what she was like !

I can tell you now, that I would repeat that very same sentence now and in the future but also thinking about going back in time, back to the time of the British "Mining Catastrophy" and the start of poll tax and 25 percent + interest rates.

It does not matter when it is said or when it is written or who said it. That's the thing about the truth. Margaret Thatcher might be gone but the memories of what she did in those desperate years, especially in my home county of Yorkshire, will, sadly, last forever and ever in my own lifetime. And they will possibly live on into the next generation.

Shambolic and so sad that no-one had the courage to stand up to her except at the very end. At that time, the cowards in her own team turned against her and said that "enough was enough" - some 15 years too late.

Re: Article: Margaret Thatcher dead: Morrissey blasts former PM as "barbaric" just ho

This morning on conservative talk show radio that panders to ruling class oppressors, they were trying to triumph Thatcher's response to a politician's concern over wealth disparity, i.e. unfair distribution of 80% wealth leached off the working class to the 1 percenters. Thatcher was yelling about how the poor have more money than they did in 1979 and that was her great argument? These masters of baiting must really take the working class for fools (well, because they do voluntarily sell their labor power for peanuts.)
