Here is my little e mail to MTV:

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what kind of show "120 Minutes" is exactly. It sure as hell isn't the one I watched when I was in High School. Now it's basically the same stuff you play the rest of the day, except you take out all the black artists.

Which is a damn shame, not to mention racist, because some of the most "alternative" and creative songs on MTV aren't made by Matchbox 20, Everclear or Everlast, they're made by Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill and Jay-z.

Case in point. I saw a video for the House Of Pain wannabe's "Lords Of Brooklyn" on 120 Minutes. Isn't that rap? Oh, it's white rappers, nevermind. Will you be playing Eminem on 120 next week?

This was the same gripe I had with your "Alternative Nation" program. They would play the same heavy rotation pop rock stuff they played during the day. Except without the soul and rap singers. I thought more honest name for the show should be "Aryan Nation" instead of "Alternative Nation". Fortunately for you Smashing Pumpkins has A Japanese American in the band, otherwise there would be hardly and minorities in your 120 Minutes segments.

PS Play some Morrissey videos.

I keep telling everyone....fire that fat-ass and give the gig to that hottie that was on this past week.

Don't you know? Alternative AKA college rock are politically correct terms for white boy groups with the occasional smattering of Abra Moore. So, yes, it is just that progressive that women enjoy a large role in it as well.....¿ Case in point. I saw a video for the House Of Pain wannabe's¿ "Lords Of Brooklyn" on 120 Minutes. Isn't that rap?¿ Oh, it's white rappers, nevermind. Will you be playing Eminem on¿ 120 next week?

Remember Pat Boone?

It's not necessarly MTV's fault for creating that genre. It's just what was started on college stations years ago when you really didn't find one black person on campus. And since that point on, it was associated that way and never really attracted the right people...or it did, yet record labels feel safer using old whitey. I'm sure you don't find too many Beastie Boys videos in MTV raps or whatever they have on now.

When do you ever see black people in commercials for Mc Donalds? When it's during Soul Train. They work under the assumption that the other 95% of programming is white oriented and they find it easier to use "white" imagery (instead of black guys dancing and rapping when they see a Big Mac...heh). I'm not defending it, but it's the advertising ethic....make everything look as homogenous as you can. That's why on NBC, they are having tons of sitcoms about the 60s this week building up to their big miniseries.

I hope there are no gangstas in here.....

But, there are two kinds of women MTV plays...one with an acoustic in hand, and the other from some broken, gang-infested community.¿ Remember Pat Boone?¿ It's not necessarly MTV's fault for creating that genre. It's¿ just what was started on college stations years ago when you¿ really didn't find one black person on campus. Yo MTV Raps plays the Beastie Boys, but not as much as they do in the daytime. What makes the Beasties alternative?? They were forefathers of rap before Hammer, before NWA, etc. They came around the time LL Cool J was a kid, when Run DMC was raisin hell, Biz Markie was just a friend, etc. It's coz the Beasties have alternative skin color to the majority of rappers. I hope no one calls me racist, but that's the truth..I hate Beck, but he deserves to be called a rapper--that's what he is doing! He's RAPPING! Just coz 3 Jews are rapping about "I'll stir fry you in my wok" rather than "Bitch! Ho! Cap yo punk ass!!", they aren't classified as rap?!? I remember when Everlast was a gansta rapper [before House of Pain], and he was clasified as alternative. This ignorant racist hiearchy is why I no longer have respect for rap, and Everlast said it best when calling rappers of today 'karakoke singers'.

It is MTV's fault, coz they limit your mind, telling you only certain social categories exist in the universe. Example: Alternative music is only punk/ska/Third Eye Blind music/electronic music/Lilith Fair music....nothing else!! I'm New Wave, and I exist! But, MTV feeds 16 year old mind that I don't exist, or that I'm a jerbroney.¿ When do you ever see black people in commercials for Mc Donalds?¿ When it's during Soul Train.

I saw one just the other day during a rerun of Seinfeld. He helped Gramma cross the street walking across the hood, avoiding the bad influences of gangs, etc. Then, he walks into Mcie D's, puts his cap on, and says "Welcome to McDonald's, may I take your order?". It's pretty old, but they still run that commercial.¿ They work under the assumption that¿ the other 95% of programming is white oriented and they find it¿ easier to use "white" imagery (instead of black guys¿ dancing and rapping when they see a Big Mac...heh). I'm not¿ defending it, but it's the advertising ethic....make everything¿ look as homogenous as you can. That's why on NBC, they are¿ having tons of sitcoms about the 60s this week building up to¿ their big miniseries.

Whenever I see urban shows or commercials, they are quick to poke fun at caucasians, like they are the 'uncool race'. The hip hop genre is racist, and no one has the balls to admit it. They need to do away with that kind of ignorant humor. And, they are doing a horrible job with multi-culti "Saved By The Bell" kinda shows.

P.S. I'm Filipino, for the record. Ask me what my cousins listen to. I know what I'm talking about.

You go, boooyyeeeee!

Mani, you are so correct, sir! That's the problem with American society in the '90's, political correctness. God forbid if someone cracks a joke about blacks, but screw the Jews, Asians, Hispanics, Whites, etc., etc..... Everyone says listen to rap, open your mind. Puhlease! I don't like rap because it's sample filled crap full of nonsense! Everyone kisses a black person's ass because they've been through so much (racism, slavey, etc...). Oh, but us Asians or Jews or Latins didn't go through any problems in this country? Screw Rap, die MTV, and may political correctness suffer a quick death. Viva Morrissey/Smiths and every true band out there, you know who they are.

Re: You go, boooyyeeeee!

¿Everyone kisses a black person's¿ ass because they've been through so much (racism, slavey,¿ etc...).

Yeah, that's why they have all our jobs. I was just asking myself the other day....when was the last time I saw a white man as a CEO? Too many black women have taken over that job. Yup. Making poor old whitey start out on good wages just to help his plight out of the fraternity house when his connections with his dad's friends didn't pay off, only to hit the glass ceiling.....tsk tsk shame.

I feel sorry for all the white people out there that have to pigeinholed into starring in shows like Seinfeld. Oh, they can't stretch themselves in their roles.¿Oh, but us Asians or Jews or Latins didn't go through¿ any problems in this country? Yeah, if we can't feel sorry for the Mexicans, we shouldn't feel sorry for anyone! Rah!

Actually, the Beastie Boys started out as a punk band. This was before "License To Ill."

And, by the way, will someone PLEASE get that Eminem video off 120 Minutes? I mean, if that's classified as "alternative," then they may as well do away with all their little genre shows and JUST PLAY THE VIDEOS! Where do you draw the line between the Beastie raps and the Eminem ones?

I can't believe I'm arguing this point! = )

These days, Middle Easterners have the worst racism main due to America's ungodly war with the Iraquis. Middle East racism is NEVER addressed because it is accepted.¿ Everyone says listen to rap, open your mind. Puhlease! I don't like > rap because it's sample filled crap full of nonsense!

Moz once said that there is no such thing as rap music. Just one rap song being done over and over again.

As far as this open-mindedness garbage, hip hoppers are hyp-hop-ocrites. They are quick to further stereotypes rather than address and attempt to destroy them.¿ Everyone¿ kisses a black person's¿ ass because they've been through so much (racism, slavey,¿ etc...). Oh, but us Asians or Jews or Latins didn't go through¿ any problems in this country?

I despise even how MY people use our injusticed histories as a crutch. It's ignorant to think the world owes you something just because of something that happened generations ago. My old friend Randy was not let on a rollercoaster in 92 coz he was too short. Today, he's 5'8", and it's not like the park is obligated to give him cuts in line for the 1992 trauma.¿ P.S. I'm Korean, but who gives a @#!!! ?

You should. Be proud of your heritage, but don't use it as an excuse. You succeed in this world because of where you are going, not where you've been.

"My name is, my name is, scratch, scratch, a dumb oreo"

Don't get me started with that Eminem crock of @#!!!. "Let me act ghetto because it's cooler than being myself." What can you do about that stuff, the record companies know that there are tons of misguided teeny-boppers out there who will eat up all of that junk such as Eminem, Backstreet Boys, yada, yada, yada...¿ Actually, the Beastie Boys started out as a punk band. This was¿ before "License To Ill."¿ And, by the way, will someone PLEASE get that Eminem video off¿ 120 Minutes? The problem with your thesis is that the dude is from the ghetto.

Well gawd, at least he's not a conformist!

And being from the ghetto makes his career more legitimate. Sounds familiar, Vanilla Ice anyone?¿ --------¿ The problem with your thesis is that the dude is from the¿ ghetto.

First you faulted him for trying to be something he's not. Now you fault him for being what he is. Come on.

The problem with Vanilla Ice was that he only CLAIMED to be from the hood - he was fake. Eminem is apparently real, for what it's worth.

Come now, behave!

I guess you watch a lot of BET, boooyyyeee! Anyway, Eminem should die. Sorry if I offended anybody in your Eminem fan club, Colin. Eminem, haw, haw, haw! Catchy name, isn't it? And do you know the name of his first girlfriend too, Colin? I mean, since you know the guy like he was your brother. Lighten up, buddy! Jeeez!¿ ------¿ First you faulted him for trying to be something he's not. Now¿ you fault him for being what he is. I was watching it just last night - a pretty weird program about Fidel Castro, whom I suppose had been named an honrary Afro-Cuban.
