Manchester icon Morrissey to feature in new animal charity advert - Manchester Evening News

Excerpt:

Manchester music icon Morrissey poses sternly with a cat on his head to prove exactly what is on his mind in a new advertising campaign that will go live this week.

The former Smiths frontman and keen animal rights activist agreed to the quirky ad campaign to raise awareness for a new campaign from charity People for Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The Suedehead singer poses with a rescue tabby on his head with the slogan: “Homeless Animals on your Mind? Spay or Neuter today” in a bid to halt the thousands of unwanted cats and dogs ending up in homeless shelters.

In support of the campaign, Morrissey says: “Despite the fact that they're incredibly intelligent, animals unfortunately haven't yet worked out how to slip on a rubber, which is why thousands of them are being put to sleep in overcrowded shelters and thousands more are desperately waiting to be adopted.”

In typically outspoken fashion the Meat is Murder star adds: "Letting cats or dogs have litters is tantamount to shooting shelter animals in the head since it kills their chances of adoption. Please do the right thing and spay or neuter your animals."

Vegetarian Moz is a keen supporter of the PETA charity, and indeed was named PETA's “Person of the Year” in 2011.

The new ad campaign is highlighting the huge numbers of animals that end up abandoned or destroyed.

This just makes me want to get more food the next time I'm at Taco Bell.

Re: Morrissey fronting new PETA add

"Animals haven't yet worked out how to slip on a rubber" - did he actually say that!?! :lbf: bloody hell. Times have changed for Moz.

If that were a homeless cat Mosser's face would be a bloody mess.

:D

Cats have barbed penises, so even if they could slip on a Johnny (as it were), it would be a vain gesture. Sorry, Moz, but plums-off is the way to go. Readers can help cut off a tomcat's plums by buying one of my Mini Moz Cats Protection calendars, here:

(What? Does no-one talk about castration?)

I am sitting right next to a homeless cat that I took in and my face looked this messed up before he ever came into my life. He is the sweetest creature you could ever hope to meet.

Will PETA do a campaign to stop well-cared for pussies from killing garden birds? I prefer the sound of birdsong in the morning than the sight of dead birds mauled by our feline friends. Declining populations of all our garden birds is due in no small part to killer cats. Perhaps we could slip the rubber on their heads to stop the continuin mass murder which, in Morrissey's confused world, is akin to the holocaust probably

Neutering means fewer cats, thus fewer birds slaughtered. Cat lovers AND haters should get behind the campaign.

PS: If you're a cat owner living in the UK and on a low income, Cats Protection can help you with the cost of neutering. More details here: http://www.cats.org.uk/what-we-do/neutering :)

I suspect Morrissey's been influenced by the work of Pentii Linkola the radical Finnish environmentalist, who is no stranger to Morrissey-like provocation on issues he feels strongly about.

His (Linkola's) specific treatment of the cat overpopulation problem is dealt with in-depth in the book "Can Life Prevail?"

For those not "in the know" there's more about Linkola here:-

I have two cats, bought as kittens because all the local animal charites refused to let me adopt any cats due the fact that I live on a road which has traffic on it!! They are neutered, insured, vaccinated and have all their regular health treatments. I have a secure walled back garden which they are playing in right now and I am also a bird lover and member of the RSPB, so they have to learn to share the garden with the birds and many feeders that attract them. Yes they have killed some young birds but fortunately not many and you just have to accept that their natural hunting instincts are strong and do what you can to temper that, such as not letting them out at night, putting bells on their collars and feeding the birds when they are not active. There is place for all creatures to coexist if you use a bit of thought and common sense.

maybe moz and chrissie hinde could do a duet to raise more awareness and funds for peta?
