A report on the "I Dream Of Morrissey" convention (London, July 18, 1997)

The convention on the 18th was wildly successful with a total sell-out of tickets. Attendees were greeted by hairdressers who quiffed everyone’s hair, then we were all handed NHS spectacle frames, hearing aids, plasters (band aids) and gladioli. The actual club area was fantastic with 5 hours of non stop Morrissey/Smiths songs. Tina C, the drag queen, did some very camp country versions of "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get", "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" and "Suffer Little Children". Her only accompaniment was an acoustic guitar and a drum machine. The audience was in stitches. The karaoke went down very well, as did the quiz.

The evening ended with everyone marching down The Mall at 2.00AM to the palace singing "The Queen Is Dead" (in a very drunken but orderly manner). A few zealous boys tried to climb the rails but were stopped by guards.

I went with 5 other friends (all in our mid 20’s) and we all had a magnificent time. It was a treat to be in a venue filled with other gay and lesbian Morrissey fans. Everyone was in great spirits and Amy Lamé was a star in her own right presiding over the evening with her amazing sense of dry humour.
