  • I bought this last week at Amoeba LA. Unknown bootlegs are always a crapshoot, so I was a bit hesitant to purchase it. I'm so glad that I did! Being a Smiths fan for 24 years, it's a treat to hear early versions of Sheila, There Is A Light, Ask, Coma, Rusholme etc. A few of the demos (Frankly, Vulgar) are already up on YouTube, and Cradle & TQID are only slightly different than the album versions - still, it's nice have these on vinyl! Even the instrumental songs are great. Amazing!!!

  • The versions on this are great. It's nice hearing Morrissey's voice so simply and underproduced. The Paint a Vulgar Picture version is incredible, and those instrumentals make me fantasize about a 5th Smiths album.

  • If these ebay only, vinyl packages were really Morrissey's doing.

Think about it. He could privately finance them, and not share a red cent with any of the other guys.

    Or maybe Morrissey and Marr?

    It would be terribly clever.

  • Its pretty obvious to me that a big chunk of what's on here are fully finished alternate master versions.
Some of this is beyond amazing.

  • And this is exactly what should be on a proper box set, yet the powers that be let these slip through their fingers and we get them for free.

Thanks for uploading these, whoever you are. My Christmas came early. Every track is a gem.

I'm almost sure you can do better than that.
  • Doesn't that mean it's illegal? I'm confused. I mean, who is behind this? Who released it? I would love to own those albums, but only if they are in good faith.

I know he got stopped selling stuff he had didn't he, so I wonder if he has thought sod it and has agreed a deal for the stuff on the quiet with someone who would go on to release it all as bootlegs?

  • finally acted

[as he wrote years ago he had loads of demoos,
    but couldn't officially release it]

I dunno the story about mutewitness61 in the forums, or
how he got them, but the person I mentioned is IMHO the source, or it is someone around camp Smiths, or a great technician who did it himself

Instrumentals are not my thing even the Smiths,
    I want lyrics and voice

That person is not amused, me thinks

anyway for all fans great this comes out though wished it kept hidden in this site, now the media
will and everyone will have an opinion and 4 persons will get lots of phonecalls, or 6 people

sorry to be so critical, bootlegs, we all know Morrissey is fine with it, he himself tapes every gig
    but this a different situation

  • In case no one has noted it... that second instrumental sounds a lot like a punky early take on "Draize Train," no?

Also, I'm thinking that extended "Queen Is Dead" must be the original full cut before they trimmed it down for the album.

Goes without saying... HUGE find. Thanks to whoever made this possible... especially The Smiths!

  • This is unquestionably the greatest event since the release of 'Strangeways, Here We Come'.

For years I've dreamt of putting together a compilation called 'I Keep Mine Hidden: A Secret History of the Smiths', which included such tracks as 'Frankly... (with horns)' and the extended 'TQID' which I knew existed but which few had ever heard. Well now I have heard them, and own them, and I can make my fantasy reality.

  • I think I will wait for the inevitable proper release of these gems now. Johnny has mentioned these exact outtakes and demos in interviews so that sort of ties up with the possibility that this was always in the offing at some point. Perhaps sooner now rather than later.
