Extract of forthcoming autobiography - Tate St Ives exhibition book

An excerpt from Morrissey's forthcoming autobiography appears in the book that accompanies the Tate St Ives exhibition The Dark Monarch, Magic and Modernity in British Art. It's a brilliant piece called The Bleak Moor Lies about a chance encounter on Saddleworth Moor in 1989. I can't wait to get my hands on the full thing.

  • I hope the public library gets a copy. I want to read it, but don't want to pay. :)

  • Is there an autobiography - or is this another exercise in jumping to conclusions?

  • I think I'll ask my Parents for this...

Better to have this than hold out for the autobiography which could be some time...

  • If there really is gonna be an autobiography I hope that it will feature an open and honest Morrissey instead of the cautious and guarded one that has been on display for so long. Honestly I usually get frustrated listening to his interviews as he constantly tap dances around questions. In the "Wrestle With Russell" dvd Russell Brand, in his unorthodox style, really tried to have a good discussion but Morrissey usually sidestepped his inquiries. An autobiography is only as compelling as its subject allows. In the meantime, I just bought "Jerusalem Inn" by Martha Grimes, and plan on enjoying another novel by the greatest mystery writer of all-time!

anyone notice the question mark after the word autobiography? This passage is lifted from an interview Moz did a few years ago. He's hardly going to be leaking passages from a book he hasn't written yet? Geezus!

  • Having read the piece in its entirety on the forums I have to say it is woefully overwritten. Unless he gets a good editor his autobiography will be unreadable. Which is a shame, because it's obvious he has a raw talent for prose, esp creating a sense of place and atmosphere, but he has a rather school-boyish tendency to waffle. The question is, will Morrissey's ego allow someone else to get the scissors out....

  • Good to know that an autobiography is in the works.
Whether this is or isn't a true excerpt, I'm going to wait for the real thing (with nice pictures selected and shared by Moz himself, perhaps a tacky badge thrown in?).

Just as I haven't bothered with the Rogan book, I'm not going to click the link. If it's real, why spoil it for myself? That's just my humble opinion.

I do hope Moz finds a good and responsible, responsive publisher (Little/Brown, Omnibus?). I've been very disappointed with biographies done in haste with other publishers (cough, Palgrave, cough) about other people, then believe it or not, sold for $50-75 because it's being hocked as an "academic textbook," pagination errors, typos and all.

Please make it a beautiful work and with humorous, honest storytelling from your point of view, Moz. And please make it accessible and affordable to fans. I believe more will sell this way. And if you want a meticulous editor (smile), "honey, you know where to find me."

  • If this truly is an excerpt of Morrissey's autobiography, then it's exactly what I expected.

Morrissey is not a long-form writer, he's a short-form writer and unfortunately he doesn't know his limitations.

If this autobiography ever does see the light of day, I'm afraid we're going to get a lot of this meandering prose. Do we really want to know about a possible ghost he might have seen in 1989--described in over 5 pages?

I'm afraid no editor will be able to save this tome. Oh well, it'll be another item for the completests to collect--in hardcover and the paperback second-pressing with extra photos and an extra forward by Jonathon Ross.

I'm almost sure you can do better than that.
  • I read the excerpt and I really liked it. It seems that people would just like him to get straight to the point instead of painting a picture for us and transporting us to another place and time. Would 140 characters suffice, something like: "I think I saw a ghost, LOL"?
