Received my copy of 'The Sound Of The Smiths' today - and I think it's excellent! Nice punchy sound brings out the full power of the songs, especially on the muscular early material. And how wonderful it is to hear the remastering on tracks like 'Jeane' and 'Pretty Girls Make Graves'. (A great improvement on the bootlegs, that's for sure!) I'm sure the compilation's success will bode well for the possible reissue of the studio LPs remastered; and, hopefully, we might also see the release a fuller rarities collection or boxset (which is still sorely needed) one day too.

It's essentially an A- and B-sides collection (something the critics seem to have missed, the ones who have called the second disc 'messy' and 'unsatisfying' anyway), and it does the job very well. Although, it would have made an even better collection if a few liberties had been taken with the track selection, namely, replacing tracks like 'Oscillate Wildly' and 'Money Changes Everything' with vocal B-sides. (Ensures good continuity though.) And the preponderance of 'Meat Is Murder' tracks (6 in total) highlights the band's more abrasive, radical side, especially when placed alongside the one album-only track, 'The Queen Is Dead'. Shows The Smiths dancey side well too ('This Charming Man NY Vocal', 'Barbarism', 'Jeane').

This release scores well on all fronts, a fitting tribute to a great band.

            A triumph!

Fact is, it's the best Smiths comp so far(2 disc version) with the best sound.
I for one enjoyed listening to the re-mastered songs again(the 'new sound' is definately worth hearing) and if you resent paying for songs you've already bought many times over then it's fairly easy to download!
                  Just enjoy everyone!!!
