Worst opening song on any Morrissey album.

Maybe since California voted to repeal rights of gay people last night, Morrissey still has a valid point.

It feels good, that's for sure. An obstacle between people of different origins seems to have been removed at one fell stroke already and maybe we can all identify with eachother on a more real basis now, and therefore communicate about what matters without so many fears and prejudices. Despite all the other gigantic conundrums, a movement towards unified efforts for peace and cooperative survival is blowing in the wind.

It was reported some time ago that one of Morrissey's favourite poems is called 'An American Prayer', written by Jim Morrisson of The Doors, and it seems appropriate to recall it now.

there is a good chance that Mr. Obama is not eligible to be Prez due to the "natural born citizen" clause...which would then invoke Directive 51. What then?

Nothing has changed, with regard to race relations in America, except that we can all tell ourselves that we're not divided anymore because we've elected an African-American president. I am a huge fan of Obama, and I'm excited for his years in office, but this doesn't indicate a step towards equality in American culture in anything like the way that school desegregation did (for example). This country didn't let go of its racism overnight, and self-congratulation over apparent symbolism can even make that worse.

Morrissey's lyric in "America is Not the World" wasn't as dumb as it sounded (I don't think he was necessarily saying that a black, female or gay president would automatically be a good or meaningful thing, so much as that he simply thought that American culture was sexist, racist and heterosexist and this was an unshakeable truth - which it is) but it was never one of his greatest insights, anyway. If he sings the song again, presumably it'll be in a more triumphant mood and with appropriate changes, but I doubt he will, because the point stands even though his example was proved untrue. It takes more than the election of one candidate, no matter how impressive the man and how high the office, to heal centuries of conflict and bigotry.

The song was already unfit for public display.

He doesn't need another reason to abandon it for good.

It makes "Sorrow Will Come..." seem nuanced.

70% of black voters voted in favor of prop. 8, sealing its victory.

More importantly, Barak Obama does not support the idea of gay marriage. He's been fairly clear about that. So much for "hope."

However, I doubt many people were voting based on real issues any way. It was just a fun "shock your parents" type election for many.

Thank goodness! Our world and this country would really be turning to s*** if the alternative were elected.

Obama is not only our best-qualified, but also multi-racial (black, white, Hawaiian and Indonesian-raised). He grew up outside the norm, educated himself and learned/mastered the good things from the system, and now he will reform it because we simply cannot live in this denial of the rest of the world and the full stripes of this country anymore.

And what a wonderful speech by him last night, completely inclusive (including gays and lesbians; only bisexuals and transgenders have a right for complaint here perhaps because he didn't spell all out withing LGBT) and aware of the need to listen and work with every demographic within the country and working diplomatically with countries beyond.

But in California, I hear the votes are still being counted for Prop 8. BOOO! to homophobes who voted for it. 40 years ago, if you weren't white, by law you couldn't ever marry Morrissey even if he got down on sucked your feet and put a ring on every extremity. The law said "no". That was deemed a violation of civil rights in 1967. Prop 8 is also financially imprudent. Who is going to want to waste taxpayer money from the impending lawsuits that will come out of a Prop 8 "Yes" and refuse to accept people who generate life, business, creativity and revenue for our communities? People who've given so much back knowing the world often turns its back in their times of need as human beings (I'm talking healthcare, hospital visits, not being legally allowed to stay in a shared home after a partner passes). I'm being almost completely utilitarian in this case, of course. Almost.

Another appalling thing is that at the same time, on the same ballot, Prop 2 for humane treatment of farmed animals for consumption has passed by a wide margin. This is a good thing in and of itself of course, and a big step towards people realizing their meat comes from a life, but why do people who voted pro-Prop 8 not see the disconnect? Acknowledgement of humanity in farm animals but not giving an inch to gay and lesbian Human Beings to take care of their partners and encourage monogamy? This proposition makes marriage, in effect, heterosexist. imho, marriage is about more than procreating (should straight couples who can't have kids not be able to marry?) Discrimination is such a waste of time, energy and money in this world (imho). How much could have been done with the $140 million+ raised to fight for or against the proposition? People also thought it more important to vote "no" on same sex marriage than to vote "yes" to improving children's hospitals. What??!!! When people's kids end up in emergency rooms or need chemo for cancer or arthritis that grows from the toxins from our environment, they'll realize the benefit. We hope it never happens. The reality is that it can and it does. Children's Hospitals are also university research hospitals at the very forefront of medical care. What is a success there benefits adult care as well. At least the Children's Health Insurance Plan, left in the hands of legislators and the new President Obama, will have a chance to get back on track now.

On Danish radio today they actually played that snippet from 'America is not the world' to emphasize the historic moment. Must be the first time in many years Morrissey has been played on P1.

I now rate the music in this track much more highly after hearing Christy Moore version.

Moore's acoustic guitar arrangement seems to bring out a melodic beauty in the song not present on Morrissey's version. Maybe this says something about the musicians and producer involved in YATQ.

However, Moore's change of title and lyrics do destroy some of the important nuances in Morrissey's writing.

I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that this would be in order to have your college education paid for. Community service is great, but I keep getting stuck on the word required...not, "if you help out your community, we'll help you out with college."

I know children need to be taught the value of hard work, but it should fall on the parents, not the government to teach that lesson.
