There are a few gay references on The Smiths albums. Songs like This Charming Man, Hand in Glove & Handsome Devil ...but why do people overlook the vast amount of lyrics about females and relationships with women. Or songs which contain heterosexual themes. Songs like...

The Hand that rocks the cradle
                Pretty Girls Make Graves
                Well I wonder...
                Wonderful Woman
                Jeane (is likely a girl)
Miserable Lie ("I followed Her" at the end)
                These things take time
                Girl Afraid
                London
                William, it was really nothing
                Ask
                Girlfriend in a Coma (Obviously)
                Stop Me...
                I Won't Share You

I always wonder why these are overlooked when the references to homosexual relationships are so few compared to heterosexual references, or plain ambiguity in the lyrics. I thinks it's because they exist at all...(and because Morrissey always looks so gay). I just thought that these may be points of interest for the heterosexual fan or anyone who thinks the Smiths are gay and that's all there is to them.

I mean bisexual ...but I've never actually shagged a guy" interview to Melody Maker in 1972 was nothing more than a publicity stunt); so does make-up and theatrical stagewear constitute "gay" in 2008? Reading comments on the Smiths lyrics on the internet and homosexuals I am in fact developing a deep aversion against homosexuals, because they are all over the place and totally ignore that Morrissey's lyrics are so gender neutral at times that they are not "of course" (as they claim) homosexual but speak also for women just as they do for men. I had a talk to another woman the other week and she also said that when she was young Morrissey's lyrics just spoke so perfectly to her as a young female teenager!

It is in the nature of western societies being so stuck in all that gender stuff that there is even that urge to simply ignore gender neutrality. After all, even those gay couples are so stuck and narrow minded about it that they play man and woman in their relationships. Pathetic. And now this list. Wonder if there will ever be such a list of "most gender neutral" albums. But hey, that would be too demanding for most narrow minded brains, even homosexual ones or particularly those.

I think that anyone who get upset at the prospect of The Smiths being a 'gay band' is missing the point. They belong to everybody, and the fact that Moz so freely plays with gender roles and classifications opens their music to everyone... straight, gay, bi, asexual, whatever. And yes, Morrissey is most likely gay himself, so get over it.
