Over the labor day weekend on XM Radio, the station FRED (Channel 44), played a count down of the 2,044 most essential alternative songs ever. (They play a lot of Morrissey and The Smiths) Here is top 30:

              #1 -A given ~
              #2 -They had to b in there,better then 'casbah'.
              #7 -Fine choice.
              #9 -Suprised it rated so high,but glad to see it.
              #13-All time classic song -period.
              #28-Another all time standard.
              #29-Always like this one- but not many other by them.
              #60- well, we all agree that many other songs could have gone there instead.
              #77-has always been a favorite but also,another choice could have been made.
              As for all the cure ..they make me sick
              And that fucking 'blister in the sun' have always hated it
              the rest are pretty basic stuff but ..
