Morrissey to be a guest DJ on KCRW (Aug. 29)

Brutalful writes:

I was just listening to 89.9 KCRW in the car on the way home (Los Angeles radio) and the announcer mentioned that Morrissey will be doing a guest DJ set for them on August 29th.

There is nothing on the website about it, but there are details of the guest DJ program, so perhaps more is to come.

"KCRW's Guest DJ Project invites an array of cultural icons to share and discuss songs that have inspired and moved them with KCRW DJs. Actors, authors, chefs, athletes, directors, tech entrepreneurs and more share their musical passions, giving deep insight into both their lives and their creative process. Check back each week for new sessions with notable guests in this ongoing exclusive feature. KCRW's Guest DJ Project also airs on our all-music channel during Anne Litt's Saturday show at 1pm, repeating Sunday morning at 1am."

great that he is back in US... how about some YOR warmup dates closer to album release date, whenever that might be.

    Perhaps something like this:

    December 9th First Single Released

    December 9 - 15 5 Shows in LA/Las Vegas area

December 22 - 31 5 Shows in London and Manchester UK

January 2009 Years of Refusal Released

Feb - March Full UK/Europe Tour

    April OFF

May - July Full US/South America Tour

    August OFF

    Sept - October Austalia/Japan Tour

    Makes good sense to me.

I love how this news item, whether true or not, has captured everyone's imagination. Maybe it's because nowadays the term DJ or deejay is so much more broadly defined that it original meaning oh, so many moons ago.

A DJ can be a radio personality who plays prerecorded music of either his choosing or dictated by the broadcasting format, or it can be a person at an event spinning and mixing tunes on a console or even like the examples I cited in a previous post (perhaps not really relevant) of choosing a compilation of songs for a cd like Morrissey did for "Under the Influence" or for "Songs that Saved Your Life" from the NME issue back in 2004.

On the stations site, there is an archive of Guest DJ Project past guests found here that may be worth a listen:
                      http://www.kcrw.com/music/kcrw-guest-dj-project/ [kcrw.com]

So, basically he won't be turning knobs or reading the traffic report, nor will he be challenged to stand by a twin turntable console à la Fatboy Slim trying to mix the Jonas Brothers "Burnin Up" with "Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets in B" (not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying...)

Based on the past shows posted on the radio's site, he would basically just sit down with a KCRW deejay with a distintive, mellow la-de-da voice and talk about his favorite, influential tunes by other artists. Very adult and very dignified.

                      I like it.

The only thing that could come out of this is if he plays the studio version of some previously unheard song from his new CD. Now THAT would be news!
