The Smiths’ “Suffer Little Children” – Pop At Its Creepiest - cinemablend.com:

By Peter Kimmich: 2008-07-10 02:27:16

I don’t get goose bumps very often. Occasionally I’ll be sitting at home some cool, quiet night with headphones on, listening to a song I love, and I will feel a quick wave of awe; my arms will tingle for a few seconds, then it will be gone. If I had more time to sit still, it might happen more often.

But sometimes it doesn’t have to wait for the right time.

It happened to me the other day, in fact, while I was driving home from work – on a hot day, maneuvering through traffic. And it makes sense, considering the song. It was The Smiths’ “Suffer Little Children,” possibly the creepiest pop song ever written.

This is yesterday's news--why bother? Ask Sufjan. (Score:1)
Morrissey has been quoted as saying that these murders had a profound effect on him at an early age. This is a very old controversy, and there is nothing creepy about the song whatsoever.

This song is a compelling reflection on a horrible tragedy-- and nothing more. If you want to hear a very troublesome song, try Sufjan Stevens' "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." from his album, "Come On! Feel the Illinoise!" Those lyrics are haunting.

If I really try hard enough, I'd swear that Morrissey's songs saved my life. His songs do not celebrate tragedy, death, or sadness. Rather, Morrissey has compelled many to foster hope and love in a world that often isn't fair or just. Morrissey gave me hope at age 12, and I am a better man for it. Peace.

Actually, The Moors Murders have been in recent news here in Manchester. Manchester Evening News dated June 11 had Myra Hindley on the cover. I was shocked to see this because I thought of it as ancient history as well. But, apparently, her prison files have been made public recently, so the first five pages were full spreads on the subject. I didn't bother reading the article that prompted the commentary, but thought it worth mentioning the recent appearance of the story. I found it a little haunting to see the pics of the victims whose names I've always known because of the song, "John... Edward... Leslie-Anne..." The fact that it all came up right as I finally made it over to Mozzer's hometown, strange coincidence...
I know alot of people who find Mozzer's music depressing, but it has always made me tremendously happy. I cut my musical incisors on The Smiths at a REALLY young age, so I'm probably just damaged from exposure, I dunno. But, if this is wrong, I have no want or need for "right"......
